What is protocol for such situations?
That pretty much is the protocol, feel awkward at the time, come post about it here later.
What you could do is say something like "sweet fixie bro, you on the forum?"
I generally favour option 1.

Sat at the lights with a two forum people whose bikes I recognise from here and whose faces I recognise from Twitter but have never met or spoken with.
I would've liked to have said hello, but it made me feel like a weird stalker-ey type.
What is protocol for such situations?
