It should look something like this:

I don't think that's a Vitus, looks more like a Peugeot?
-
• #4
its a Vitus 979
-
• #5
Nope, I'm sure it's a Peugeot Comete that someone has put a Vitus sticker on!
This is a Comete:

Jeez - are we getting into one of those "you say potato" situations? Ok.....if anybody else believes it's a pug, I'll amend details and price.

Sorry Errol - should've kept my nose out - but was trying to be helpful! I'm pretty sure a Peugeot Comete is rarer than a 979 in any case!

prentends to be annoyed, makes price way higher. mwaaaaahahahaa

Getting the provenance right or wrong is hardly comparable to personal pronunciation; people deserve to know what they getting.

@velo - I know you are, and I'm grateful for it - I'm just hoping this doesn't turn into one of those 10 page epics where one person's sincere believe is set against another's and the point at issue isn't resolved.
@JT - I'm not annoyed, nor pretending to be so. It wouldn't make the price higher in my book, but thanks for the tip.
@T_K..statement of the obvious, to what purpose exactly? -

"@T_K..statement of the obvious, to what purpose exactly?2
You seemed to bemoan the fact that the bike's marque could be up for debate - that the matter was as trivial as how one might pronounce a word such as potato. I wrote that I didn't think the analogy really worked. My 'purpose' therefore was to make explicit that whether the bike was a Vitus or a Peugeot was something that could be important to some people; a potential buyer who was specifically after a Vitus, for example.

just teasing mate :) its a fucking nice frame either way
-
• #13
Even if it was a Comete they were made made by Vitus same as the peugeot alloy bonded frames were, plus its says vitus on the bb shell dead giveaway that
-
• #14
@T_K....you're actually misinterpreting what that particular line means. I'm not trivialising clarity about the brand, so much as expressing - lyrically and with humour - my wariness about another, never-ending symposium taking place and people being distracted from actually buying the thing. Clear? Good. Now, let's call the whole thing off...

Those Ale pedals make me think Peugeot, but who cares? If we're working ourselves up into a Gerschwin-Rausch, Ich bin dabei, Baby! Let me fetch my tap-shoes!
-
• #16
Clear, but I dispute there was any humour involved -let alone lyricism.
-
• #17
what the fuck is it then?
-
• #18
As the saying goes 'if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck and looks like a duck....it is a duck'.....that looks like a Vitus 979 frame and i used to have one!
-
• #19
Nothing doing here on this Vitus/whatever - open to reasonable offers for the bike, frameset and wheelset.
-
• #20
Price drop - £250 for the whole thing, otherwise offers taken on frameset and wheels.
-
• #21
This is still available and I'm still none the wiser about it. Price drop £199.
-
• #22
I've owned both and that's a Vitus (telltale indicator is design where chainstay meets seat-tube).
-
• #23
Not to start a further dispute, but I have a Vitus (MK1 979), but think this one might actually be a Peugeot Comete - As Vitus didn't use any bolts like this on the seat tube/rear triangle joint, this one also doesn't have the same rear brake mount as the more pointy Vitus' and it also has non-vitus forks...
Hope this helps! -
• #24
Flipping heck! Ever shift it?
-
• #25
Nope - it's still standing idle in my hallway.
For sale is my Vitus Dural 979 road bike, with -
57cm frame, Shimano 600 gearing front and rear, ITM bars, Weinmann type 500 caliper brakes, 700c tubs (Mavic Module E rims with Normandy hubs dated 1978, 5 speed freewheel). I can't find a frame reference in the usual places (maybe it's obscured by the cable guide underneath the bottom bracket). Anyway, it's an early one and might appeal to a collector. I'm looking for £350ish for it. I'm based in London (SE) for collection, but will help with shipping if it has to go further afield. Judging by a similar recent conversation, it looks like Viet Nam is a no no......
