  • Get the 45mm city version instead, up to 38mm and perfect for your Genesis.

  • The biggest tyre size I'm going to run is 28mm, so any wider than about 35mm and it's just wasted width and extra ugliness.

I bought the narrow SKS Bluemels in the end, similar to Chromoplastics but rounded, no ugly translucent strip, matt black finish and cheaper. I'm yet to fit them/have them fitted but I've seen them on other bikes and they look great.

  • Well yeah I wasn't going to hack apart a set of guards just for that bit.. i did go to my local hardware store but no luck..ill have another look about..

  • B&Q have loads of things like this. You might have to buy a pack of 5 or 10 but they won't be dear and you can always put the rest on eBay as mudguard extender dowickies for a fortune.

  • Good shout, i'll try and pop in over the weekend. Cheerss

  • If you can't find any suitable L-shaped bracket things, you can always buy strip alu/steel from B&Q too

Enough for twenty or so - assuming you've got the means to saw file and drill.

If you're really stuck, let me know the dimensions you want and I'll make one: costs would amount to little more than a large letter stamp and pennies worth of metal from the offcut box. You might even find someone on here and local (to you) that could do it in a school / college workshop for free - even after Gove's interference, a foreigner (workshop terminology for unofficial outside job, not the other thing) will always take priority and be more interesting than education- one for 'Any Question Answered' maybe?

  • Will this do if you bend it in a vice? You can have it if you PM me your address / want to pick it up from me.

  • Sorry, phone internet seems to have made that pic massive.

  • I've just ordered 31mm wide Honjo H33's from Milwaukee Bicycles. What a ballache to find these things!

Apparently when they arrive they're going to be an absolute pain to install too. Still... nice metal mudguards will make my commuter/beater more durable. Plastic mudguards always cause me a different kind of nightmare, especially on older frames when the fittings and sizes don't work.

  • Dremel or equivalent is your best friend for installation of any fender set.
DIY fittings usually fit/look better too.
Set aside an entire evening with your choice of Mantovani on the Victrola.
Install after 1 drink, before 3.

  • I've already been looking at Dremel's on Amazon.

  • I'm hoping to find mudguards to cover Schwalbe balloon tyres, I'm converting an old MTB into a relaxed beach-cruiser-ish thing.
    Big Apples come in 26 x 2, 26 x 2.15 and 26 x 2.35
    Fat Franks come in 26 x 2.35
Is there anything available which will comfortably cover a 2.35 width?
Currently looking at Velo-Orange, Gilles Bertoud style Stainless, but some of the flat wooden or metal ones look ok too.
Ideally I'd like to go for the widest tyres, but if that means I won't be able to fit them inside mudguards, I'll have to be a bit practical.

  • If flat is ok, diy alu might be the ticket.
Either rescue some old stays or buy a set and get some 1/16 or 1/8 by 2-2.5 aluminum flat bar.

  • You need to look beyond bicycles.

    Maybe at trials bikes?

    http://www.tytrials.co.uk/trailandtrialsuk/prod_137190-Universal-Trials-Fender-Mudguard-Front.html

Two of those, a heat gun to help bend them a little, and a few custom brackets and you'll be good.

Weirdly... those might be way too large for you.

  • What's the widest tyres you reckon I can get away with on 18-23 Chromoplastics? I'll have a measure later but any chance of 25s or even 28s?

  • There's also these at 64mm width... which would look like skinny fenders on large wheels: https://www.ridepdw.com/goods/fenders/sodapop-fenders

And I've just found this, which looks like it would be a great rear fender for a fixed gear bike that has zero means of attaching anything: https://www.ridepdw.com/goods/fenders/excalibur-fender . Doesn't work for you though.

  • I was successfully using 25c on narrow road rim (Kinlin XR200) with space maybe for 28c .. would be toight

  • SKS market them as being suitable for 28s: http://www.sks-germany.com/?l=en&a=product&r=mudguards&i=999999999&CHROMOPLASTICS

But... it part depends on how much clearance you have under the fork and brakes to fit this in.

  • I have bought some matte black SKS Bluemels guards for my Genesis. I haven't fitted them yet, but they are good value and very easy on the eye compared to the Chromoplastics.

  • @amey @Velocio cheers, will have a look and see how much clearance I've got left. Fork and frame clearance is fine, it's a 27" to 700c conversion. Narrow rim too.

  • I'm tempted to try one of these (QBicle Tangent mudguard). Anyone had any experience with them?
