  • Well these bags are HUGE, super stuffed, a single one would take up and entire pannier

  • What size middle ring do you have again 6pt?

  • I have no intention of ever using the big ring. Only that all modern chainsets are triples. Could I just get a triple and only use the Granny rings?

Sorry to hijack your thread by the way. A bit reluctant to start my own though.

  • What I did on Kati's bike is to get a triple and have 46/30, then use a chain guard to replace the big ring, the advantage is that chain line is perfect on the 46t leaving less wear on the long run.

  • Ah I understand - I meant that if you were worried about gears, getting the right chainrings on your double would do the job. But if you're going modern, do it.

  • or this and this if you're feeling flush.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  • The more I look at them the more I sort of want them for the Dawes.

  • A very personal question.

39, I think, as we bought the larger of the available options. The 39 got us through most of the tour really.

  • Wow okay! Get that then, they're huge!

My mountain hardwear phantom 32 packs down to nothing and is like 650g. It one hell of a bag. And it'll work down to -10 with some clothes on and a silk liner. I used it at 0deg as a quilt. I can't rate it enough.

  • @6pt definitely want to get a modern group

  • Going to have to make my own thread aren't I....

  • You could do. There should probably also be a central 'Tandem Knowledge' thread, where all of this can be shared because there are a lot of problems, both in here and no doubt that you'll encounter (and @Hovis has encountered), that'll be common to many tandem restoration/maintaining jobs.

  • Yeah, think I'll pose my questions here https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/161718

  • Is there's a difference between a tandem cranks and a normal one?

  • Never mind, for some reason I didn't factor in the non-drive drive side crank (how do you call it?).

  • Timing crankset?

  • Gotcha, cheerio.

  • One moment I'm here looking at your bike, the next I have a Dawes blocking the entrance of my flat, condemned to eat boiled rice until next year. I blame the internet.

Do you mind if I ask you how wide a tyre can you run with mudguards on yours? I bought Paselas 28s (my ass, they look more like 25s) and there's a bit of space left, it might take a similarly small built 32 but can't see how it'd fit anything wider, which is a bit of a shame.

I actually found the tandem very forgiving, much more flex than a single bike, but the lady cycling behind me begs to disagree.

    That's the spirit! bravo!

  • Marathon 32s were fine. A not-quite-fully-inflated 35c Michelin something-or-other was just acceptable but at proper psi caused issues. The mudguards are the SKS Chromoplastics in 45mm wide (I think).

  • Thanks for the reply. I was studying this pic:

My mudguard also struggles to fit on the bit where's the diagonal tube, I actually cut dents on it so it moves closer to seat post and conforms nicely to curve of tyre.

But I think my issue is compounded by having a drum brake on the other side. The boss that holds it has no room for horizontal adjustment, which means that it's not possible to move the wheel further back on the dropout. If that makes sense.

  • Just picked up this thing of beauty, looking forward to making it fully ready to get riding again, Sorry to drag up an old thread
