I know what the author meant but surely "stick through her spokes" or "umbrella through her wheel" or something might've been better.

It's true. The statement was bollocks. I thought the meaning was obvious but the delivery was shite.
I'm sorry. I'll have to ask you to give back the keys now.

One of the things that annoy me (a little) is the effect that the reduced sponsorship in pro cycling is having on women's pro cycling. Male teams seem to be just about scraping by, but women's teams are really struggling. Nicole Cooke's team had to fold last year and that was one of the reasons why she had a (by her standards) poor season. Then she tried to sign with the team that was Nürnberger Versicherungen, but the announced sponsor (Skyter Shipping) turned out to be in financial trouble, so that fell apart. She's now apparently still teamless. I think the impact on women's pro cycling is a little-noticed side effect of all the doping scandals.

"The sudden rumble overhead fails to put a spoke in her wheels."
Jesus christ.
What the fuck is that supposed to mean? How does that even remotely make any sense whatsoever?
Nothing wrong with that phrase, it's perfectly crumulent.
