• Matt at Saffron makes some amazing bikes, he won best in show at the last Bespoked or something like that.
My Oak is amazing, it was the first racing style frame that Ryan had built and we decided on a geometry that's like a cross between classic Italian frames and a criterium bike. I paid a good amount less than I should have because of this and Ryan has since got a longer waiting list and bigger overheads.
I have only heard good things about Talbot, and he seems to be churning that out at a rate of knots. Which is a good thing.

It may be worth getting a bike fit beforehand or depending on who you go with you might be able to do one with the builder. They will most likely ask you about your current bike and what you would like to change.

  • Thanks for this. I've just found @hoops Talbot thread and I'm impressed (cc @coldharbour). I have a fair idea of what I'd like functionally and aesthetically but not a bottomless budget, so I probably need to write my ideas down and speak to a few makers about what's achievable within that.

I have to say that I'm also a carbon virgin and there is an imp on the other shoulder saying it would be a good deal cheaper to get a well-spec'd road bike through the cycle scheme, albeit with a substantial top-up from my own pocket... I am hugely vain, though, so the thought of seeing my own name emblazoned across the down tube is pretty attractive.
