Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • Yes! Just remembered it last night. Still haven't settled back into the groove. Will deal imminently.

  • Still on the attachments vs. images question, in picture threads (memes, porn etc.) quite a few posts don't need any text, but one cannot post a text-free reply if the picture is an attachment. To the viewer, there is no difference between a post which contains an attached image and one which embeds an image from a third-party server, except that the poster has to include some text with his attachment.

Also, I still can't attach anything using Opera (Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.2; Win64; x64) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.17) by clicking on "Upload a file" (nothing happens at all), and I can't upload by using drag and drop on either Opera or FF, I just get 'undefined' and then an error page when I hit post.

  • I suppose it's too complex to have an username and how we'd like it to be displayed?

  • I suppose it's too complex to have an username and how we'd like it to be displayed?

It makes little sense to have both.

How you'd be displayed is how people would refer to you, if you're then asking them to refer to you as someone else... then surely that should be how it's displayed?

It just creates a major UX issue, and yes you could argue that emoji usernames do too... but when the obvious upside is that people can use their native language in their username (i.e. if you happened to be a Hungarian mathematician and wanted to use your real name you could actually call yourself Erdős_Pál without fear that the system would crunch your name... though unfortunately you'd also be dead and would not care about such a system).

  • I don't seem to get alerts for replies to PM's that I have sent - but I do get them for PM's that are sent to me.

I have the option ticked for email alerts for "When you receive a new comment in a private message" but I would expect this to cause alerts to be sent in both cases - otherwise I have to tick the alerts box each time I send a PM in order to get alerts on it.

  • Username history pls. Like ebay.

It used to be possible to infer a username's previous incarnations from quotes, but this is not possible anymore.

With people able to, and taking advantage of, changing their usernames whenever they want, it's difficult to keep track of who is who.

    This is hilarious.

This is why vBulletin and other systems never allowed username changes, and why I had to do them manually and write hacks to do them. And because they were demanded so much, it's why I decided not to have hacks but instead to have support for it.

Now we have it, and it's too much, and all of the reasons for not having it are more obvious.

I can add something that shows, say, the last name you had... but this wouldn't be a searchable thing, it would just be something on the profile page "previously known as ... ".

But it won't reserve old usernames, and so there exists the possibility that 100 of you could change your name to Tommy, quickly change it back... and 100 of you would have been previously known as Tommy.

Given that such a system won't reserve old usernames, what do you envision? What happens with the eBay history (I've not seen it).

  • Alerts are never sent to the person that created the event (small-e) that triggered the alert.

  • No - and I wouldn't expect them to - but I would expect replies to the message to trigger and alert - I get a "new message" icon appear when I receive the reply, but no email.

  • @danb means that when you receive a message back in a conversation you've started, you don't receive an email, but you do when someone starts the conversation.

Is that something you've consciously left out?

  • Indeed. I was assuming people would choose simply a different "font" for display purposes, not using something totally different.

  • yes - that explains it somewhat better.

  • I'm confused by this, though it sounds like a bug exists I'm not sure I understand it.

    Alice and Bob example...

Alice creates a conversation, auto-follows it and sees the "email notification" box checked.
    Bob replies to conversation.
    Alice doesn't receive a notification.

    Is that the scenario?

  • will send a test PM to confirm

  • Didn't know Erdos was a member of this community! I can reduce my number once I chat with him !

  • I think so.

I have "When you receive a new comment in a private message" ticked.

If i start a conversation by sending a new message, when i get a response, i do not get an email notification.

If someone else starts a conversation with me, i get an email when they first send it and then for every subsequent reply they send.

    Does that make sense?

  • Alice creates a conversation, auto-follows it and sees the "email notification" box checked.

This doesn't seem to be happening - its not checking the "email notification" box - despite my notification settings being set to email me "when I receive a new comment in a private message" on my profile.

  • Also, I've just checked the last "PM" i sent / started to 6pt and the "notify me by email" box is unticked. It's ticked for all the conversations someone has sent to me first.

  • I think I've just fixed this, the issue was that it is the comments API that registers the notification preference, and it was registering the wrong type (non-huddles were fine).

I've fixed this, but the fix doesn't apply to old huddles.

  • Just started a conversation with you and @danb and it appears to have ticked the notify me by email box. :)

  • @Velocio, I tried to share a message and it asks for the user name to share with. Should this be @Velocio or just Velocio? It would be good if it automatically populated with usernames once you started typing. Once I'd typed your name though, there was no confirmation button so I just click Close and then nothing happens.

  • The @name works, and in some boxes like the sharing of PMs just the name bit works too. Both should work.

The only time a name doesn't show in the list is if you've already selected them (it won't add duplicates) or if there are 25 names showing and you haven't typed enough to fully identify someone.

  • This is hilarious

It's some of my finest work

What happens with the eBay history

When you view a profile, it shows a list of previous names.

  • So, can you see the original message JD sent me? Because I shared it with you but there's no indication you're in the viewers list.

  • Yup, I see it. I replied to it, I see you, me, and JD in that PM.

  • This one: http://www.lfgss.com/huddles/3011185/ ? Not the 'Thread isn't live' one I sent you?
Your icon doesn't appear in the viewer list.
