Which wheels?

  • Current plan for the Caminada is "classy silver" bits and gumwall tyres

This is how it currently looks

This is roughly how I'd like it to look (apologies for the horrendous picture)

Crabon wheels that are currently on it will be going onto whatever I decide on as my "nice" bike - which may become a silly Planet X weight weenie project or may be a Bob Jackson Vig

    I digress...

The current contenders for wheels on the Caminada are as follows:

    H+Son Archetypes

    Mavic Open Pro (sorry Thross)

    Velocity Chukker

Any other suggestions and opinions would be appreciated...

  • H+Son TB14 for that box section vibe?

  • Yeah @thross they were a possible consideration too - especially when laced like that

Do you know what hubs they are?

  • Phil Wood I'm afraid, certainly not beater material!

  • Haha, yeah that won't be happening!

  • I spun the Halo hubs Matt's got laced to that black Archtype in the shop a couple of days ago, and they feel incredibly smooth considering they're relatively cheap Chinese things.

Alternatively, everyone (aka tester's) choice for cheap as chips but reliable hubs - http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HUOOLF/on-one-large-flangetrack-hub

  • It's a tricky one isn't it - I do feel like I shouldn't spend so much on this bike as it's supposed to be my beater / ratty bike but also don't want to buy cheap and then end up upgrading anyway...

  • Yeah I know what you mean, but once you get past a certain quality threshold, upgrading is hopefully just personal preference rather than necessity. I don't need new wheels, for example, I just want some! There are plenty of reasonably priced parts that you could get for the Caminada that you'd only need replace when they're completely knackered a few years or so down the line.

  • Personally i'd go open pros, they look classy !

  • I quite fancy the chukkas as it's supposed to be a chuckable winter bike!

  • Chukkers are by the the heaviest of the bunch though, and won't necessarily be any stronger than Archtypes if tensioned properly. I know weight's not that important for a winter bike on paper, but half a kilo extra rotational mass when you're riding into a headwind and it's pissing down is something worth avoiding if you can!

  • Good point! And the last thing I need on a bike is more weight!

  • Tb14s or open pros

Oh and thanks @thross for reminding me that they exist, now I really want some

  • TB14s laced to DA and gumwalls FTW

  • having said that gumwalls can >>>>>> for the winter

  • For muck reasons?

  • the walls are a bit weak so more prone to punctures, but yeah actually muck!

  • Ah ok, didn't realise that! As per I was only thinking of the aesthetics!

  • It's only really the rear wheel that gets grimey (grease slung from chain and cog) and it only really happens in wet weather. Concurrently the winter rain tends to wash all kinds of spikey things into the roads, get em on quick and enjoy the last on the summer!
