  • Cable could be clamped on the wrong side of the bolt and the angle is throwing the pull ratio off (I've made this mistake on front mechs) but it really really really sounds like a bent hanger.

It needn't be visibly bent for it to affect shifting performance, add to that the fact its very difficult to actually 'see' a bent hanger because all the stuff around (spokes, chainstays, seatstays) have their own angles, curves etc and you arrive at needing to check it with the correct tool.

  • It needn't be visibly bent for it to affect shifting performance.

    This very much.

That tool is always the first thing I grab when the rear derailleur is not shifting exactly as it should, the alignment tools not only tell you whether it's slightly off, but you can also use it to bent it slightly back, which is probably the case with your.

  • Against my bank manager's better judgement I have ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gear-Mech-Derailleur-Hanger-Saver-Dropout-KHS-BIANCHI-SCOTT-MANY-GENERIC-No-24-/301293964051?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&var=&hash=item4626850b13#ht_0wt_0
If things don't improve as a result he will be down London with a big stick to recoup some of my extensive overdraft.

  • Dude, you don't need to order a new one, just get it checked and aligned by a mechanic for a fiver, or for beer if you're friendly with your LBS.

You should listen to your bank manager.

  • I don't get the impression Dallas is willing to follow advice. It was repeatedly suggested he takes the bike to his LBS, and that buying an alignment tool was not required.

So instead he buys a new mech hanger, when it could be the frame that is the problem.

    Genius.

  • I snapped a hanger when a twig wrecked my rear mech and replaced with brand new one but turned out dropout that was damaged too though visually hanger looked straight.
You need to get it aligned mate.

  • My mech hanger is bent on my training bike. SRAM apex still works flawlessly. Solution? Buy SRAM.

  • I'm terrible at taking advice, basically I like to hear people agree with my first assumption. However since the majority didn't I thought I'd loosely follow advice. I am a busy person and Fred Williams (lbs) is a busy shop, so rather than attempt the complex organisational problems involved in getting my bike there I spent an extra fiver of my bank manager's money. It may indeed prove to be the frame that's out but the frame is aluminium and difficult to manipulate and on borrowed time anyway so it's a risk I'm prepared to take. If I've wasted £12, it's £12 less damage to my liver in the long run.

  • Personally I reckon loctez is right and I'm prepared to waste £12 of my own (nominally) money to prove it.

  • Or not, as everyone'll assume the frame is to cock (I've had it from new and never crashed it). You guys must love shimano!

  • If the dropout is a bit out you could use the hanger alignment tool to bend the hanger to compensate, did you get the right hanger for your frame? There are about a million different types.

  • Yes, right hanger as far as I can tell, it looks the same and lists scott (I've got an old speedster s4) in the title, however with eBay it's usually a gamble.

  • Look here at the variety of mech hangers. http://gearmechhanger.com

There is a huge chance you have bought the wrong one.

  • I just know you're all praying I won't have, it's that kind of love that keeps me going.

  • If you have a threaded axle track wheel you can use it as an hanger alignment tool; just screw the axle into the hanger and check for gap varying between the two wheels.

  • That's a good tip dubtap, thanks. I haven't got a suitable wheel (my fixie axle has a strange thread and size) but I'm pretty sure I can knock up something suitable.

  • Ok, I admit it may be slightly out of line, thank you all for your patient advice, I may be gone some time!

  • am a busy person and Fred Williams (lbs) is a busy shop.

    It's a two minutes job.

  • Just like removing a BB.

  • Fitted new hanger, no improvement. Trip to Fred Williams bike shop, diagnosis, sticking cable. New outer at the back, job done. In my defense I had checked for this and cleaned that outer by running a spoke through it but under load it was still too tight. Anyway it's fixed now, thanks for all the help and advice, sorry for doubting shimano, it won't happen again!

  • I still reckon the hanger's bent.

  • hello not sure if this is right place but was wondering does anyone know if the below mentioned is compatible?
downtube shifters ( 80s frame I think " Sirius" shimano 600 rear mech and front and shim. 600 hubs with an 8 speed shim. cassette think its a hyperglide ? not to sure. clarks 6,7,8 speed chain. all the mentioned was new or good condition except rear mech bit worn used to be ridden with a 6 speed rear wheel. when its in small cog at the front or pressure on it going uphill it slips constant. any ideas people ?
