Snapped Columbus genis frame

Posted on
  • Was cycling up a hill this afternoon then I heard this strange snap sound then felt my frame go limp. Looked down and it had snapped by the gear cable mounts.

Pretty gutted to say the least. Anyone know if the frame is savible? Or a write off?

    Any suggestions?

Frame is Columbus genius, sorry for the typo

  • You have to talk to a frame builder... the tube would need to be replaced... to be honest these days it will be cheaper to get a new frame off Planet X... but if you are sentimentally attached to this, then speak to someone in the trade

  • I don't know about that, I have been quoted £60 to replace my toptube in 631 from Neil Orrell. Then you would have a columbus genius/631 frame rather than a Planet x CrMo jobbie...

I would guess though that when the down tube snaps like that it puts a fair bit of stress on the joints for the few seconds you are still weighting the bike.

  • Lip quivers

    Sorry for your loss.

  • I would also wonder, assuming that tube has snapped whilst under normal usage, what the structural integrity of the other tubes might be like?

  • Think it might be easier just to get a new frame.

Got to look on the bright side that it didn't happen when I was going down a hill at 35mph.

  • Very reasonable... then you have to add the cost of a respray though... :-(

  • if you're getting a new frame do you plan on selling the remains?

  • Yes I would, what would you offer?
