  • That would be great. It isn't the post I care about though, I would need you to take the gubbins out, and measure the width of the alloy sleeve ring at the top, as well as it's diameter.

  • Ebay search tools. Is there a better way to find the average/best selling price for an item, other than completed listings? is there a tool that does that?
can i export as csv or something?

  • Does anyone have any experience of the software ArcGIS and Q-GIS? I've used Arc in the past but my licence has expired. I could look into asking the university to renew it, but Q-GIS is free and also (apparently) runs on a mac which I'd find useful.

Thinking about making the switch but I don't know if there are any likely compatibility problems, or whether QGIS is even any good?

  • Best place to buy 1/8" bearings local i.e. Central/SE London?

  • Never rode a bike in the UK, so we're planning for next year's summer holiday. How about this route a friend of mine drew up for a bike trip from Bristol > Newcastle? Needs to be refined obviously, but

    • are the A roads rideable?
    • are we missing out on nicer parts?

    Suggestions are most welcome, cheers!

  • A roads are to be avoided like the plague

  • Maybe where you are...

  • Yes. Much more unpleasant than their continental counterparts.

  • Some A roads are ok, some are really awful. A lot of them are functionally identical to motorways without a hard shoulder. Aseasyasridingabike has a visual comparison to this effect: http://aseasyasridingabike.wordpress.com/2014/03/06/more-motorway-idiocy/

Not all A roads are like that (some of them are like this: http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/images/9/92/A26_junction_with_Blackboards,_or_Orrisdale_Road_-_Geograph_-_1845748.jpg ) but you never know when the reasonably sleepy two-lane A road you're riding on is going to lead you onto a monster dual carriageway with HGVs thundering past with centimetres to spare, so they are indeed to be avoided like the plague unless you're already familiar with the specific roads you're using and know them to be the ok kind.

FWIW routes using B roads tend to be nicer and a bit shorter, in my experience - you don't end up doing sweeping diversions around little villages and can go from A to B (hah!) more easily. Means more time for beer and nicer scenery on the way there.

  • Using Strava's popularity-based routing should help avoid those A-Motorways.

Can't comment on the suggested route are it conveniently bypasses most of Cheshire and Lancashire where I ride...

  • Threw a singlespeed MTB together from spare parts and a frame from a dumpster. The only thing that does work as well as it should, is the headset. It's a 1 1/8" threaded Mavic jobbie, where the hex key lockring is cracked. Can I find a cheap replacement of either the lockring or the entire headset anywhere?
@Hulsroy has offered to extend the steerer for an Ahead setup, but I need a quick fix for the coming weeks.

  • Since the cranks I wanted are on backorder at the moment, I'm on the hunt for a new crankset.

    • 165mm length
    • 130mm bcd
    • External BB
    • 42mm chainline
    • black
    • sub £80

Anything? I could be persuaded to use 170mm armlength too if there's nothing availible...
And I just don't like the look of the Alfine ones...

  • And I just don't like the look of the Alfine ones...

Not much choice beside this, the Alfine are decent value for money.

Other choice is a Shimano road specific one with USE chainring, which will end up costing more than the Alfine set.

  • cheers @Sumo @bothwell @6pt & @Emyr last year in Spain we had a couple of those leading into cities like Pamplona en Bilbao, scary shit for a Dutchie/pussy used to dedicated cycle lanes!

will start planning anew using B roads... open for suggestions to improve the overall route as well

  • Spain can be a bit rubbish for non-massive road routes into the bigger cities. Not a recommended practice, but a few years back on the tandem we ended up taking the motorway into San Sebastian. It was ace and really really safe, because we got a police escort who stopped the traffic at every slip road.
They're not quite so jolly about that over here.

  • My Chrome Metropolis stinks.
The sweat from my back has soaked into the material and is well off.

    How should I clean it...?

  • I have Fuji Track Classic.
Something is clicking in my back wheel. Clicking every 1 second when I'm pedalling, but when I stop pedalling for a second it's gone.
    Maybe it's freewheel?
I brought it to Evans cycles, they checked, said that everything is fine. But in 2 days it started again.
Anyone who knows what I can be?
And have some spare time this weekends?
    Thanks

  • Check pedals, check crank bolts, check stem, check everything and torqued accordingly.

    Never trust Evans Cycles.

  • Anyone know where you can get a gabba jersey re-waterproofed?

  • Not all A roads are like that (some of them are like this: http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/images/9/92/A26_junction_with_Blackboards,_or_Orrisdale_Road_-_Geograph_-_1845748.jpg ) but you never know when the reasonably sleepy two-lane A road you're riding on is going to lead you onto a monster dual carriageway

I use a level 0 google street view recce of a proposed route for this. You don't actually go into streetview, you just start draging the man so that the blue lines showing where streetview is available appears. Dual carriageways show up as double lines, and as a bonus "cycle routes" that are actually more like dry stream beds tend to show up as having no street view.

  • Peter, your route from Huddersfield to Glossop might need revising. Cut out some miles and add a big hill (see stage 2 TDF), from Holmfirth take the A6024 over Holme Moss and down on to the A628 (Woodhead Pass). This will leave you with a brief 1km stretch of the A628 to do before turning off on the excellent B road to Glossop.
Woodhead Pass should be avoided at all costs, except weekends (and then early), as there is lots of fast moving wagons on it.

If you want to add a few miles, take the A57 (Snake Pass) from Glossop and then via the Hope Valley, possibly via places like Hathersage and Eyam http://www.eyamplaguevillage.co.uk/ rather than the uninspiring A624 from Glossop to Chapel.

Hope you've got some low gears.....
