My new loot less character has made me feel a bit freer... less to lose... and as a result have been on busier servers and met more people... only 2 were hostile, pretty sure one was the prick who killed me, chased the shit out of them as they had already lost all my kit!

back at nw runway getting geared up after a prick shot me. did a run through and got some bits but lacking automatic rifle, saw at least two different unfriendly chaps who tried to shoot me so I ran off into the woods. Also found my first heli crash site but it had already been looted.

That was so bloody unlucky... I didn't stick about after you got shot but hid in the woods until server refresh, now have an AK with a drum mag and some spares... might have an hour or two spare this eve but I am very East I think.

May have bought DayZ last night... Once I figure out how the hell it works I may have to jump in with you guys.

Any tips for a complete nub?

Totally aware that it will be buggy for a while to come, but this game sounds perfectly up my street and want to give it a spin anyway.

Dont eat rotten food.
Run away from all zombies until you have an axe.
Eat everything you find until you are "healthy".
You wont enjoy the first 12 hours.

Aim to meet up with someone on here, they will be able to help out... I may be able to get on for an hour or so this eve...

Yeah, eating and drinking is important- don't stop when you character quits complaining, keep stuffing your face till you are hydrated, energized and healthy on the tab inventory screen.

If you spawn on the coast turn your back on the sea and run- in general: if you hit a road first you are on the east, if you hit train tracks you are on the south. Also make a point of noting the server time as it will decide if the sun is in the east or west.

Prob start on a 3rd person server (you can toggle 1st and 3rd which is handy for peering round corners, over walls etc) on a stable 0.48 rather than experimental.

Dont eat rotten food.

I haven't seen any since the last update, before that everything was rotten.

• You need an axe and a backpack.
  
• Axe will open food and pretty much get you out of all problems.
  
• Backpack will carry food
  
• use ctrl tab and load the Dayz map in the internal browser.
  
• If its night go on to the graphics settings and turn gamma up for night vision
  
• dont jump off anything your legs are pitifully weak and bones will break
  
• punching someone in the head who isn't waring a helmet will knock them out (1 maybe 2 punches)
  
• turn the volume up and navigate in 3rd person only search and fire in first person

One more tip, tear your t-shirt into rags to use as bandages.
Gutted, my character got wiped last night. It's the first time it's happened to me. Goodbye AK and 4 x drum mags. Ah well, it's always fairly liberating.

I like the intensity of only having an axe and food and just going for a mission. Without an axe its just fleeing for hours and guns are useless for zombies as it draws more but awesome on players. The shotgun is best in my opinion as you can usually dash around a corner and then blast them when they poke there head around

@fettled_nuts was it the 0.49 wipe last night?
@Mule more good tips... I rarely use guns... and have never killed another player... kinda want to keep it that way although I do fancy killing some bandits.

I've never attacked, only ever defended. the problem is people will drop you before you get chance to show your friendly

Yeah, thats the real bloody challenge, I've been shot quite a few times before I have even seen the pother person. I now leave all weapons on my back when moving so if anyone does open fire they have no excuses, "he had a gun", not that that really stops most.
Still, met nearly 50% friendlies so far. Really want to bump into a poorly equipped cowboy bandit once we have teamed up because I am kitted the fuck up and good to go.

Just did another run through NW- still no AKM or AK101 but got mags and rounds for both. Found another longhorn, a magnum and a I can't remember pistol.
