  • Never rode a bike in the UK, so we're planning for next year's summer holiday. How about this route a friend of mine drew up for a bike trip from Bristol > Newcastle? Needs to be refined obviously, but

    • are the A roads rideable?
    • are we missing out on nicer parts?

    Suggestions are most welcome, cheers!

  • Peter, your route from Huddersfield to Glossop might need revising. Cut out some miles and add a big hill (see stage 2 TDF), from Holmfirth take the A6024 over Holme Moss and down on to the A628 (Woodhead Pass). This will leave you with a brief 1km stretch of the A628 to do before turning off on the excellent B road to Glossop.
Woodhead Pass should be avoided at all costs, except weekends (and then early), as there is lots of fast moving wagons on it.

If you want to add a few miles, take the A57 (Snake Pass) from Glossop and then via the Hope Valley, possibly via places like Hathersage and Eyam http://www.eyamplaguevillage.co.uk/ rather than the uninspiring A624 from Glossop to Chapel.

Hope you've got some low gears.....

  • I would be very tempted to start the route with a slight diversion into the Cotswolds; Stroud, Fairford, Lechlade, Cheltenham etc - some really beautiful English countryside around there, lovely quiet roads, still plenty bumpy but not compared to what you've got scheduled for later. Is also riddled with charming pubs.
