• Looking for some friction shifters that I can put on my road bike drop bars, near the brake hood?

Something along the lines of Kelly Take Offs:

    Or Suntour Commands:

Or a DIY job, I've seen a few photos online, or any suggestions for other ways to achieve drop bar thumb shifters, on a budget (already priced up the idea of brifters on my bike, and I would have to change my whole back wheel, derailers, front crank, etc, so had to scrap that idea!)

  • because you can keep your hands on the hoods, or v near to ?

  • Just near to the hoods, so I don't have to lean down in traffic. Had a look into bar-ends, but would be really keen to have them up around the hoods!

  • A couple of pairs of band on shifters modified for single use.

  • Did you do a DIY job? If so any suggestions. I'm looking for something similar for a budget CX bike which will be a dingle-speed with front mech to permit gear changes on the move.

  • If you feel like being spendy, then grenvelle / retroshift look effective.

  • Thanks, I have seem those. They look nice but as you say are a bit pricey when compared to bar ends. I stuck some bar ends on, having never used them before, and was surprised how easy they were to get used to. The only downside is shifting while climbing is more awkward. I suspect the Gevenalle shifters are harder to use in the drops.

  • Yep, impossible apparently.
