see "older square taper" could mean two things (according to forums online): the pre-2011 UT carbon square taper (my crankset) and pre-2004 square taper. i have chainring bolts for the latter and the circumference is too large.
the kcnc bolts are the right circumference, so when they arrived i thought "magic!".
i'm now convinced they're wrong: they're bottoming out against each other. once fully tightened, tightening one side whilst NOT holding the other causes them to rotate. balls.
so "older square taper" means one of three standards:
wide pre-2004
narrow pre-2011 UT
narrow pre-2011 sq. taper
?
If your bolts are pre-2004 (and don't fit), then your cranks are 2004/5/6 square taper (not UT) and you want the bolts with the part numbers in the second diagram above.
