What was the solar charger? I wanted a dynamo, but son = ££££
Was it good enough for charging phone/garmin?
-
• #153
Poweradd Apollo 10,000mah. Rosie's phone was a little too juice hungry for it but it worked with the garmin just fine. I think nightly phone charges would be optimistic but once every two/three days would be feasible.

That sounds fair enough.
It says you can charge via mains too, so you can do that if available. What did you guys do for campsites? Did you organise before, or just go around shouting 'ou est les camping'? Once your legs were getting tired and you thirst in need of a quench.

I think the only one we pre-booked was in Sussex (because we had to). We called ahead for Camping La Maillardière because it looked lovely and it was tiny and we didn't want to head there if it was full. (if you end up that way, go there. they were really nice. tell them the people on the tandem sent you).
Everything else, we would ride on until about 80k, then Rosie would google to see what was around within how far we thought our legs could carry us. The benefit of having lots of time this year was we were more than happy to stop early if we saw somewhere nice. Spain was a little trickier as things were slightly further apart so we tended to google in the morning and set a goal for the day around the 120k mark.
Hotels - Pamplona and Santander we booked a day or two before, everything else was a turn-up-and-try-our-luck affair, much like the camping. -

I did try to book the first campsite too as it was Bastille Day weekend, but they never replied to my email. Wasn't a problem anywhere though - the only campsite that was full still found a place for us to pitch.

ah no chance, unfortunately
lots of tidying up to do before it's rideable:
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNTk5/z/m1EAAOSwxH1UANis/$_57.JPGI won't do anything too fancy apart from cleaning it up, polishing, greasing, etc. Hopefully it'll keep costs to a minimum while I slowly figure out what I want from a tandem before committing to something more serious.
6pt & tricitybendix's Dawes looks so dependable, it'd be amazing to get something like that one day and set out to somewhere very, very far. Sorry for the thread hijacking, but someone has to take the blame for me buying another bike.

Nice, Gitane is a sweet name to have on a bike... That timing chain looks so tight!
-
• #164
@6pt @tricitybendix something for you two?
Nemo Tango Duo, 1,160g

Looks like you have a hub brake, thats a must for any sustained decent.
Looks rad.

My parents had Rab custom make them some sleeping bags a few years ago after they're (identical old ones died). They're two single rectangular bags that unzip flat and then zip together to make a double as shown above. No good for touring though as they're down filled.

Ok, need to read this thread from top to bottom.
6pt decided to keep mine and work on it, felt bad giving up on it.

DO IT TIBBS!
Seriously though. Best place for ideas on how to pimp your tandem is on a tandem ride. I came back on Saturday with my head whirring about what hubs, what brakes, what shifters etc. etc.
Let's go again!

Might be a silly question, but does having friction shifting for the front derailleur mean I can change from a double to a triple chainset without any fuss?
-
• #170
I believe the answer is yes, but I could be wrong
-
• #171
Whys down no good for touring?
I've a down bag.
Down is fine for touring. You can get left and right zip bags from a lot of companies, and thus they'll zip together into one if wished.
-
• #172
Yup, as long the derailleur is triple.
-
• #173
Aye, tb and I both have down bags.
-
• #174
The only times we used the big ring this year were accidental. 39/30 or something would do the job (32/11 on the back)

46/30 FTW.
Camping chairs do have a certain appeal.
Also the transition from 6 weeks of holidays back to "reality" must be a little rough.
Great read! Thanks!
