  • That's amazing! Did you go to her end of walks party? ;)

Don't get me wrong, cycling is by far the superior way to travel, clear the head etc in London, but I was just so glad to have use of my other limbs - and kept thinking how good a bit of walking is for bone strength!

  • haha no, I didn't go.

  • going to read through this thread now. long story short. broke my clavicle late june. had surg because the gap was to big for it to heal on its own. have some hardware and a plate holding it together. problem is, i feel like im ready to start some sort of physical therapy. my doctor has only issued me three exercises to do each day but still havent recieved a follow up x-ray or actual physical therapy. so i sit here most days, lose motivation, knees are hurting now from how immobile ive been.

edit* next appointment is in 2 weeks. the wait is too long.

  • When was your surgery? Sounds like a long wait to find out how it's healing.

Are you not doing any activity in the meantime?

Please be cautious of following anyone's advice but your ortho team's.

  • my surgery was july 1st. i had 2 follow ups with the surgeon http://www.stamfordhospital.org/Find-a-Doctor/Doctor-Bio.aspx?Id=2981 i've asked her both sessions if i will be starting pt anytime soon, and she said not until my follow up x-ray in a few weeks. ive been out of work since the bike accident. i havent even been to the gym for my legs. i really want to move again but i want to do this right.

  • I really sympathise.

Feeling physically vulnerable + pain/weird pain-relief side effects + too hot + restless + not working or socialising = challenging times.

Have you got any company at home or visitors? I recommend you get outside and walk off some of your frustration, or just go and sit in a cafe so you're not on your own all day.

Perhaps also call the hospital to see if anyone can advise you or give some reassurance?

    It wont last forever. :)

  • ^^^ thanks for the advice, will definitely try those stretches! I feel the same way with the NHS physio - although I got some results out of the physio who discharged me a month or so ago, he didn't look at my x-ray until the final session and looked at bit surprised to find metalwork firmly fixed to my clavicle. He then suggested this might be why I wasn't seeing great results and found myself unable to complete all the exercises he had given me.

i had a hook and plate and was told by my consultant that until it was removed i would never be able to get full movement and rotation out of it. noiser is right about moving it as much as possible too. it really works!

yes! move move move! i think i'll need to give my shoulder a full week of physio, hours a day, to get the mobility back. compensation hides it in everyday life. even doing advanced dynamic yoga you don't test your full range of movement.

all this is based upon my own experience only. i am only so vocal because of the huge discrepance between what the doctor's and even physio's advice was and what i was capable of. i probably was reckless and risked my proper recovery but i made the decision to press ahead as my mental health was really suffering.

    sergioflorez.
the clock resets when you have surgery.
dude it sounds like you're fit and healthy so push the doctor's advice. listen to your body. pain = bad, discomfort = good (unless you feel it in the bone).

on exactly 3 weeks i was on a town bike. after 4 weeks back doing yoga. that's two months ahead of their earliest alllowance i think. i was lucky to have a decent surgeon. don't just start doing push ups. if you're in the sling still, get out of it. i had a complication from lack of mobility! hate to think how bad it would have been if i'd have stuck to their timetable.

it sounds like you're mood is starting to suffer, be mindful of that and perhaps try and use it as motivation to speed up the recovery.

    xx

  • Flipin eck I'm sore today. No idea why ?

  • what kind of pain? dull ache or sharp pain?? my hook used to dig into the soft tissue in my shoulder blade..aka pain!!

  • Feels muscular. I need proper physio ASAP but need all clear from fracture clinic first.

Soon as I get the thumbs up I'm going camp outside the physios door

  • are you receiving treatment on the nhs? are you having the hook and plate removed before rehabilitation can begin?

  • Mines slightly different: shoulder dislocation and fractured head of humerus.

Can't do any serious physio until fracture healed.
    8 week review on Wednesday.

Yup nhs but will be paying for extra physio

  • Two weeks of daily exercises later I have enough shoulder strength and range to get on my bicycle for the first time in 8 weeks! It felt so good! So happy with my shoulder. A cheeky trip to my lbs then an trip to Richmond park to do one lap :) just shy of 20 miles today.

That's just the kind of news I need. Well done!

  • All clear from fracture clinic to start proper physio.

First session this atfternoon and shoulder now feels like it's on fire,

hope it's a bit better tomorrow!

  • Had my second xray after the crash, 6 weeks after actually. Everything seems fine. No physio or suggestions on how to improve myself... they were just like "yeah cool, get on with it".

No surgery, just a sling for five weeks, back on the bike last night, did a fast 60km and felt strong. Been rinsing the turbo trainer so I reckon that helped. Shoulder is a bit sore in the morning but it loosens up as the day goes on and I don't think I have any restrictions of movement compared to the good one... I appear to have got away very lightly.

  • Sounds like a happy end. Congrats! I'm jealous.

  • Sounds like a miracle!

  • Done my first 5 mile run today
    It felt great!
I went from having 34 degree range to 145 degree in space of two weeks! Starting strength training today.
I am having surgery on the 26th of August to remove the hook plate. How long do I have to wait till I can resume my physio?
I am itching to commute again

  • So 9 weeks post injury and I'm hoping that's the light I can see at the end of the tunnel.

Amazing the improvement with some decent physio, massage and acupuncture.

Fair bit to go yet but even contemplating getting back on the bike soon (although physio reckons another month).

    Yee haa

  • congrats!
nothing physical preventing you getting back on the bike. of course there is increased risk of a break if you fall back on it.
i say this because cycling may be important to your mental health, which i doubt doctors or physios factor in when advising you.

  • Thanks, that's very, very true.

  • Is it normal for a clavicle fracture to still be visible after 3 months?

My latest x-ray shows some calcification but there's still an obvious break there. Have good mobility, didn't need pins/plates (just a bit of physio for surrounding muscles/ligaments), and there have been no issues with resuming cycling (well, apart from a twatface driving in to me this week).
