Sure, gaps in ability diminish at higher levels. I'd take 5w for £20 though any day.

Train more than the other guy and you will be faster, regardless of bikes.

It doesn't work like that at all @Mechamorgan IME. Have you never ridden with anyone talented?

I know a cat 2 that trains for 5 hours a week, year round :-(

Natural talent comes in to it, I can't deny that, but train 10 hours a week and you will be faster than them eventually.
