Yeah, running SPDs are particularly precarious, as the right tension to be sure you're not going to pull out of the pedals when you're skidding is also way too tight to be able to clip out at v. short notice. I've resigned myself to that fact that I'd rather be able to clip out with ease than skid risk free. Worn cleats with rounded bolts stuck to your shoes also really help...
