Most people just get one of the really cheap and shitty Garmins, such as the old Edge 200:

These can be used to record stuff, and then sync'd at the end of the ride. 14 hour battery life, and it just works.
You can pick them up cheaper on eBay as people are busy upgrading to big displays and low battery life.
