Which Tyres?

  • Right, my Duranos have dried and cracked so want to replace. Done a lot of miles of them and only had one puncture, including 8 days of solid Touring in France. Also have had no real handling issues with them, but despite that wondering if I should swap them for anything else, the Ones I'm thinking. Also pondering the move from 23mm to 25mm.

Ignore this, clearly just thinking out loud

  • Sounds like you need training (not racing) tyres. They are less soft and usually have harder sidewalls... something like a Durano.

  • +1 for XNs - good intermediate tryes

  • How do Vittoria Open Pave wear?

Only a tenner a pair more expensive than GP4000S, which is fine provided they don't wear as fast as eg Open Corsa.

  • Nope, neither of them. Should I?

I had to swap wheels on the Kinesis so I've got a Durano on it at the moment. Feels weird not to have a huge, squared off lump of rubber on the back.

  • It would be a fast way of exploding my old wheels so I can justify new clean ones..

  • Riding Durano Plus means I'm all skewed now. They definitely outlast Open Corsa in my experience. I did quite a lot of miles on Pave - Tour of Flanders, touring in France, etc. and loved them, until they doubled the price and I started doing stupid miles on TT bikes.

  • Definitley give Ribmos a go, they're lovely tyres and I'm gonna put them back on my commuter/beater when I can. Hoping 28c will fit.

  • The Open pave sound pretty durable then.

They're £67 a pair at ShinyBikes: which seems good value when GP4000S are £53.

PS 25mm or 27mm? They're to go on Archetypes, so I figure I don't need 27mm, as they'll come up wider anyway.

  • The OPs are for smashing around in bad/english roads/weather, I think they make a 25 for those who can't fit a 27.

25 front, 27 back probably works out even pressure... but you won't be able to swap them when they wear.

  • 24mm when I last bought them.

  • I'm trying to decide whether I can have the paves on a green bike.

  • They're for the geared Winter bike, I was just concerned about how they'd wear.

I think I'll give the 25mm a whirl, as it's a new build and I don't have mudguards yet, so not sure about clearance.

  • Ti here so no worries on that score and pretty sure they'll rock with a pair of Coca-Cola bidons...

  • I see, Vittorias seem to come up quite big (most brands seem to, except Conti IME). I've not used the Paves for ages but I know lots of people who do. They put them on for winter.

  • Thanks all: 25mm Pave and latex tubes on order!

  • Just put 2 durano plus tape 23Cs on the commuter, hope they're as good as I remember.

  • Is there a good tyre pressure calculator about? The vittoria one recommended 115/120 PSI, that seems bone shakingly high.

    Edit:

Ne'er mind, I'm going to go according to this:

  • A lot of people use 15% lower pressure on the front as a guide. You really want to settle on the lowest pressure that keeps your rims and tubes safe. That's going to be totally different for someone pottering around on the flat town to someone riding hills (putting weight on the front) and going quicker.

    I'm 60kg, on 25mm tyres – 85 front, 90-95 rear. 5 psi less if it's wet.

  • Ne'er mind, I'm going to go according to this

    That's a good start.

  • I went with Vittoria open corsa cx 23s and conti supersonic tubes on shamal ultras for a recent alpine trip. Held up well in a thunderstorm with forked lightning on alpe d'huez and Col du Granon descents in torrential downpours.

Wanted to avoid the air bleed you get with latex tubes whilst shedding a bit of weight and have found that supersonics hold pressure well. Vittorias have been great coming from gp4000s- ill wait and see if they can match longevity of contis.

Make sure any back up tube is a standard thickness one as i would not want to be on the side of the road trying to delicately fit a thin tube with cold hands.
