  • Interesting principal...

So what would be the most worthwhile misdemeanor?
    value for money speaking...

  • £30 fine for no rear light.

The Metropolitan Police said that the incident was not a matter for them and they would not be investigating.

  • Junction watch on Westminster Sq - Vauxhall Bridge - Oval Station - Camberwell Green and I'm sure a lot of other places today. Witnessed a £120 fine dished out to a moped for driving in the cycle lane and then stopping in the ASL and one cyclist getting pulled for an RLJ, sure they got a fine to.

P.S all brklzers, pretend you has brake.

  • Elephant and castle seems to have a permanent resistance of police and a squad car parked on the corner.

I guess the local bigwigs don't want any more deaths ahead of the redevelopment.

Saw a woman being ticketed this morning.

  • Loads of community support officers on junctions at the moment esp Hammersmith and Fulham all keeping eye on RLJ, loads of cars and motorbikes being told off for using ASL.

  • Shepherds Bush Green and City Road/Upper Street - hi-viz pulling over peeps.

  • all down whitechapel road again for the last couple of days.

  • There were 2 community support ladies at the (south-western corner) junction of Commercial Road and Cannon Street Road with a car in the ASL and half turn to go east up Commercial Road....they were so busy they didn't even at an eye so I pulled up in from the car near the traffic traveling perpendicular. I was looking around and waiting for them to say something to me or the driver of the car. After a few minutes of me staring at them, they didn't stop nattering and simply ignored all that was happening around them!!!

  • ^ this. Not much point in heavy police presence when none of them give a fuck, imho

  • What's the whole thing with brklz legality?

Nearly got in trouble, but quickly said "but my bike has no drillouts" and that was apparently fine.

  • What about the terrorists? Who's catching them?

  • Essentially bike must have two "brakes"(unlesss it's a penny farthing). Pedal resistance counts as one brake, so fixed and front brake is fine. Bikes with only a coaster brake are also illegal.

  • Corner of Oxford St / Tottenham Court Road

  • 2 legs = 2 brakz.

    #science.

  • Not strictly illegal but not in whole compliance with the law, it's a bit like a cars in the sense they can have what would be MOT failures on them but until it goes in for a MOT it's still fine. Not technically illegal but if you were to hit a ped with brakeless installed you'd be in deep shit.

edit - that said 99.9% of police don't know anything about it and just issue a fine should they feel the need, a bit like them voiding a cars MOT should they deem it unfit for road use.

  • a bit like them voiding a cars MOT should they deem it unfit for road use.

Unless it's serious they'd normally issue a VDRS, you then have 14 days for a garage to sign it off as ok and to return it to your local police station. Surprised this wasn't done for the brakelight on the previous page.

Anyway, police sitting at the bottom of sawyer's this afternoon. Did 4 laps of Richmond Park and each time a cyclist or two was standing next to the car talking to the policeman. Maybe they were just having a chat in light of the accident tge other day, nobody seemed in a bad mood.

  • Got the train this morning. Walking over London Bridge I saw a motorcyclist pull up to chat to a police officer, then officer gestures for a bus to pull in and has a word. Appeared to be a "this is a wing mirror, use it" type convo, by the gesturing I saw. Keep fighting the good fight traffic cops.

  • Copper on one of the whitechapel road junctions asking a lad on a fixed wheel if he had any lights at 9.15am this morning.

"the nights are drawing in, you should be prepared".

No malice in it, think he was genuinely just trying to be helpful. Failing, obviously, but having a go nonetheless.

  • UK law states that your bicycle must have TWO braking systems. Having a fixed gear drive counts as one, you also then need to have a brake, doesn't matter what wheel it's on etc.

Dickhead single speeders running only a front brake are also breaking the law, but they will probably smash their faces in long before they get a fine.

Very few Police know about the law and you can usually blag it but I picked up a £60 fine for brklz this time last year from a dude that actually knew what he was on about.

Tldr; my commuter has a front brake attached.

  • awesome. how's that working out for you?

  • I don't know to be honest, I haven't really used it yet.

It hasn't stopped peds from walking into the side of me when filtering etc.

It's just cotching on my handlebar/fork crown, taking in the London sights.

  • Having a fixed gear drive counts as one, you also then need to have a brake, doesn't matter what wheel it's on etc.

INAL, but I'm pretty sure it has to be independent methods of stopping each wheel. Not sure a rear brake and FG count?

  • It's independent so if one fails you have the other, both can be too the same wheel because if your wheel fails you'll be stopping pretty sharpish anyway.

Same for all road vehicles and plenty of cars and trikes have both brakes on the same axle.

  • I saw the police booking a cyclist and a roller skater at the cross road at Regents park, he didn't seem to notice the guy turning right without indicating or the guy in the advance stop box.

  • I'm no expert but cant your brake light suddenly stop working while driving? highly unlikely I imagine, but surely possible.
