  • What is a double hop?

  • I've been trying to work that out- putting the bike on the ground between the two planks maybe?

  • No, I think it's that little hop before throwing your leg over the bike during a remount. AKA stutter step.

I do it too. Not sure how much of a difference it makes other than aesthetics?

  • sorry.. what owlz said ^
surely one smooth motion would be quicker? not that it would make that much difference for me

  • Double hop / stutter probably reduces the speed you can carry through a remount by half - in fact, I'd say it's pointless to do that kind of remount if you stutter - just step on to the NDS pedal and sling your DS leg over instead.

  • GOOD CALL thx for this !

  • Removing potent fertilisation when that left foot slides of the pedal, in the very moment you sling shot your right foot over the saddle.

  • Looks like I killed the Boardman. I've bent the drive side dropout at some point, which was worsened when the rear wheel ate the mech. Everything I've read about realigning dropouts advises against cold setting aluminium, so I'm going to have to replace the frame.

    RIP, Chris.

  • What pedals are people using for CX these days? I haven't raced for two seasons and used Shimano PD-M520 pedals. I use these on my fixed gear and am building up a new CX bike currently. I've considered XTR pedals and ideally am on the lookout for M970s and not the current M980s as I've read they shed mud better.

Are there any others to consider? Crank Brothers look like thy shed mud well but that'd mean another pair of shoes (perhaps the plan anyway).

  • XTR trail if the weather is nice, Crank Brothers Egg Beaters if the weather is bad.

  • Maybe get on to Boardman and see if they'll do you an amnesty?

  • I tried to get hold of someone - anyone at Boardman and it was impossible, you are simply directed to talk to Halfords, who (at the time) were totally clueless.

    Might be different now mind.

  • They are now owned outright by Halfords so I expect it's worse if anything.

There's a suitable replacement on eBay with a single ring (38T) setup I wouldn't mind, so I might just get that and swap the front end out for my existing fork and cockpit as it's already setup for me.

Not sure I can be arsed building up a new frame as I've only recently finished my Pompetamine.

  • Thinking of trying out racing cx at Herne Hill this autumn - got the choice of either a nature boy or caadx - would I be alright racing on the single speed?

  • Yes. Herne Hill is perfect for single speed racing. Texas (formerly of this parish) was top ten in the last Muddy Hell on a single speed.

  • I've just seen this which looks like a great opportunity to get regular CX training sessions;

  • That look quite interesting. Especially as it's only an hour or so on the train right?

  • There's also Thursday nights in Richmond / Twickenham courtesy of Twickenham CC.

  • Oh hello.

  • 10 minute ride from Meopham station.

  • This is tempting....

And I don't even like disc brakes...

  • Anyone going to Stamner Park on Sunday?

  • Sadly not. One of my favourite courses too.

  • Argh! Too many choices.

What happened to the "Best CX for under a grand" thread? I need to complicate my indecision.
