What's the purpose of the thumb screws on the rear drop outs?

(On the pink bike)

drop out adjusters. adjust the position of the wheel in the dropout.
and to keep the wheel in position under brake forces.

What benefit do they have on a geared bike? I've got the holes on my geared bike frame but there were no screws when purchased so have always run the bike with the wheel slammed to the back of the dropouts.

Haven't much interest for modern bikes but I must say that really is shit hot.
