  • Wow, excellent result. Were there any lumps on the bike course?

  • No, it was around dorney lake (the Olympic rowing lake) so there are 4 small bridges but they were completely insignificant, the wind is usually an issue, but although it caused a 10kph difference in my speed it wasn't really that big of a deal

  • Dorney always seems to be a really fast run for people too - despite being such a dreary out and back laps affair.

    Nice result though!

  • They use the curvy road at the start of the lake for the runs in the sprint to stop it being just a straight line out and back, and in a sprint i didn't have the capacity to be bored, as everything hurt during the run, my average HR was 176 bpm!

  • Just looked - The swim is at the opposite end to the one I'm used to as well. Do you still have the lanes to use for sighting?

  • Thats a nice run split, even on pan flat dorney.
Rather be overtaken than never in contention.

Last proper big weekend of training before tenby.
Plan to go big and hilly, then just swim continually until traveling down.

  • No, and our club wave was 5 minutes after the last wave so we ran into the back markers at about half way, which meant I lost the fast feet I was following :(

  • @tommy yep mine too, we're doing some stupid triple brick session, I think I'd rather do a metric ironman, but I've followed the programme so far, and it'll be nice to have company for the run segments.

I have a few days off at the moment, so killing myself this week as well!

  • What's next after the IM Ed?

  • Strong work Ed! When is your IM?

  • IM is September 14th, i have no idea what next afterwards, I've entered the ballot (again!) for the London Marathon, so if i get that then i'll probably focus on running over the winter and early season, but it kind of depends what i think of IM as a distance, so far my favourite distance is half IM, but i'll probably sit down and decide what my favourite distance is and enter a series of races late september.

  • Beware AIDS - After Ironman Depression Syndrome. That gap left in your life by not needing to train, think about training, eat for training or recover from training, can be hard to fill.

  • The greatest risk is entering something longer and sillier. Had drinks last night with my mate who just won the Double Ironman World Championship at the weekend (and is in disgustingly good shape considering) - on the post-event comedown, we tend to drink too much and sign up to even longer races...

  • @kl

Does that require 2 horrible IM tattoos?

  • He remains unblemished, though I know guys who do have both M-Dot and Enduroman tatts. Odd behaviour. Do people who do the London Marathon tattoo 'Virgin' on themselves?

  • Entertainingly enough, Ironman have to pay royalties to Marvel for using that name for the race.

  • Ironman have to pay royalties to Marvel

That's not quite how trademarks work - Ironman triathlon can hardly confused with Iron Man the comic book character.

WTC spokeswoman Blair LaHaye said Ironman does not license rights from any company, including Marvel, and owns the Ironman brand and registered trademarks.

  • People who do 1000km+ Audaxes don't get tattoos, we just adopt a semi-permanent thousand yard stare.

  • That's just you lot looking for the next cake shop.

  • What about Iron Man the pornstar?

  • The WTC are not a sporting body, they're a bunch of yanqui venture capitalists looking to milk al they can out of their investment. They send threatening legal letters to any other firms and bodies (including IUTA and Enduroman) for using the word 'ironman', so they have to call their races 'Double iron' or 'iron distance'. It cost IUTA a stack to change everything on their website. My mate in the US calls his 'double anvil', to keep them off his back.

  • That's slightly disingenuous from the spokesperson. They have the rights for Ironman races but royalties arise from some of their other ironman business activities.

  • The whole Ironman thing can do one, to be fair.

£500+ to do a bit of exercise?

    Fuck the fuck off.

  • hmmm, i am skeptical of the value of IM branded events, but i haven't done one yet...

The $800 plus $100 to be paid on the spot if you qualify for Kona seems pretty ridiculous, no idea how they can justify the processing fee on top!

The half IM I did in July was relatively cheap at £100, but there were times it felt a bit heath robinson as a result...

  • Balls to IM branded events, did a few of them way back, not worth the money and all the boring macho hoopla. You can do iron distance for way cheaper in smaller, more friendly events e.g.

    Midnight Man - £160
    Big Woody - £170
    Ultra Challenge Wales - £130
    Ireman - £100
    Enduroman DoubleIron - £320
