What to expect to pay for bike rental

Posted on
  • I've just been quoted 120 US for a 24 hour period road bike hire in LA. That's negotiable if I hire it for more time, but does seem very high, no? Not 100% certain on exactly what bike it is, but I'm told that the shop have a carbon BMC and Trek in my size, so presumably fairly high end.

What should I expect to pay for a hire? I'm interested across the board really - wondering about a trip to the Alps or Pyrenees as well

I understand that you would pay a premium for a short hire period, but I've seen that in cycling Mecca places like Mallorca it can be as low as 25 euros a day.

While I'm at it does anyone know of any good rental places in the South Bay Area of LA :)?

  • I paid $75 a day in CA. They explained that I was actually paying for a test ride, which would be knocked off the price if I bought. They only rented out sit-up-and-beg type bikes.

  • $75 sounds much more reasonable. I've been trawling other shops and have turned up a couple that are more in that ballpark. Was that in LA or elsewhere? Ta

  • It was in the east bay area near SF. If I'd gone further I think the cheapest I saw was $40 for a 'performance road bike', but then the taxi to pick it up would have cancelled it out.

  • Paid $300 for a 7 day period about an hour north of LA last Sept. Proper crabon/di2 biz etc. so 120 seems a bit steep even within the city.

  • Wow that is cheap in comparison!

  • If you feel the desire: http://www.npbikeshop.com/

  • What about Spinlister? Essentially AirBnB for bikes... Usually decent deals to be had, if you can find something in your size near where you're looking.

  • Ah very cool - spinlister is a great idea! And thanks for the other suggestion Croft, I'm passing through Malibu at one point so that might work.
