I think if you use a possessive the @ notification doesn't work. For example @Velocio's name won't be linked here.
The @mention code starts with the @ and ends at the first space.
Punctuation is a valid part of a profile name in many cases, i.e. the name O'Riordan
So punctuation is included in checks for usernames.
