Waterproof jackets for skinny tall people

  • I'm 6'1, but with a 30" waist and a 36" chest and skinny arms so I struggling to find a jacket that won't flap around at the arms while still giving the length I need in the arms and torso.

Do any other lanky types know of a decent waterproof jacket that would suit?

  • How much u spending

  • Castelli.

I have a gabba in small and am of a similar size (6ft, 63kg 35" chest and 29" waist)

  • Hilltrek make custom. Their double Ventile jacket called Green Spot is excellent.

  • Going on jerseys and base layers, De Marchi has quite good length in the smaller sizes.

  • I should mention - I'm looking to spend relatively little on a cheap packaway type jacket, sub £60 really. I'm just after a brand or model which tends to come up quite slim fitting.

  • Castelli squadra is cheap (discounted at Evans currently) and they seem to have lanky covered. One kept me from getting too soggy on Ride London this year - def more water resistant than water proof, but if you've layered well it should keep the worst off.

  • How long would you say the Castelli held out against the rain for at Ride London? I'm a bit wary of the water resistant tag, it's hard to judge if it'll last a few hours in proper rain, or a 20 minutes of drizzle!

  • I had a jersey, baselayer, arm warmers and the castelli. My arms eventually got wet as I only had one layer of merino there, but my core didn't get much more than damp, even with the heavens opening. If you've got two decent wicking layers underneath it works okay, basically. Key thing is to accept that having a damp middle layer is the price of not being a boil in the bag chicken. I think slinging it over a softshell in the winter would keep most weather at bay, although it'd have to be a downpour to make me want to put it on over the softshell.

Edit to add - if you're thinking of something to wear just over a single cotton tshirt or similar, it won't work so well. After a bit of heavy rain you'll just be wet and cold. The really thin water-resistant packaways need you to be wearing two layers, really - they're not keeping you stone dry, just allowing your wicking layers not to get waterlogged so that they can do their job.

  • I'm basically after something to wear over a long sleeve jersey and base layer for grim rainy commutes, that I could also stick in a pocket for weekend rides where it looks a bit threatening. The toss up is between a cheaper layer that'll do for a while, or a more expensive option like this that works as a more impenitrable barrier. Cost is an issue so I'm trying to work out if it's really worth spending the extra or just making do with the cheaper jackets.

  • If you've got a softshell the squadra would work for the winter, otherwise maybe the altura is a better bet. Don't know how the sizing works for the skinny though.

  • Altura are for fat mamils - will be way to baggy/flappy.

  • I love my Castelli Misto, it's fine for my lanky frame, and waterproof enough to keep me dry over a 30 minute commute unless it's really tipping down. The only time I've wanted better was my jaunt to Brussels when it was raining non-stop.

You could also try a Confronto, which is more a hardshell type, but still stretchy and breathes very nicely according to my brother. Chain reaction cycles have them on 40% sale at the moment too!

Lawd, I feel like a castelli sales rep now. :|

  • Another vote for Castelli, I've got the Sottile and the fit is pretty good on my lanky twig-like frame

  • If you choose to go for something more substantially waterproof, I've just got the Mountain Warehouse Adrenaline reduced in store and it seems good so far. I'm 6 foot 3, with really long arms and a beanpole frame - the XS is nicely fitting, with good long arms and a longer back panel too, as well as room for something warm underneath if needs be. It's bloody hot though, even with the vents, so will be good for the depths of winter, but not great for this on and off weather, and certainly won't fit in a jersey pocket.

I've also tried the Altura Pocket Rocket, which felt incredibly light in comparison (and outrageously pricey non-trade for essentially just a race cape) but with the nice feature of packing away into itself to shove up your jersey.

  • Ended up going for the Castelli Squadra on the back of all the Castelli votes - it's only £26 from Wiggle at the moment, and if it can deal with a reasonably amount of rain that should be enough for me. Cheers for the advice all!
