Pinarello Montello

  • So, this build was on hold as I couldn't decide if respray it or not (I need to repair the front mech hanger anyway).
Now I'm pretty convinced on a respray, and looking at '89 pinarello catalogue (http://s120.photobucket.com/user/fixerr/media/Pinarello%201989/12colours.jpg.html) made me think of a fluo restyling, either giallo or fucsia (my favourite of that era) and I'm pretty sure it will work good with the graphite campag group I already have.
Still I can't find a visual example of a pink one, and I don't know if to leave the chrome forks and chainstay or go full fluo...

I'm an eternal doubt-man, so I need some suggestions... As well to find a good restorer that can fix and paint the frame.

  • I'd keep the chrome.

  • I'd keep the chrome.

If I keep it, it would be for historical reasons, but I'm not sure is going to look good with black hs, stem, and graphite mechs...

This (just look at the paint, not at the stupid build) makes me want to go for no chrome at all :(

  • Right, yesterday I drove to Bristol and took the frame to Argos cycles and the new colour will be fluo pink.
I'm leaving the chrome only on the dropouts, both on rear and forks.
Talking about decals, Carabo you said velociao has bad quality reproductions, but according to the pictures, it is the only one I found that is really close to the original decals. What were the issues with them Carabo?
Do you guys have any other website of decals reproductions?

  • Here's the decals with issues. Printer marks/smears. Layers not adhering properly it seems. https://imgur.com/a/vY1o3#0

I'd advice to contact Greg Softley from Cyclomondo. If he doesn't have the required set already you can always ask him if he would want to make one for you. http://cyclomondo.net/

  • Wow, these are really bad, looks like printed with one of these obsolete printers that transfer gold/silver foil from tape, that's why the gaps... Thanks for the pictures man!
I'll definitely make a sheet with what I need and send it to cyclomondo! Thanks again!

  • Forgot to add that the wave pattern on the SLX decals is correct, just a shame that there's bits of foil missing.

  • But you know what? I have here with me an almost NOS Pinarello Stelvio from the early 90s (a couple of years newer than my Montello), and the spacing and thickness of the typeface used by cyclomondo is completely off. You can tell from far that are not genuine... don't really know what to do.
I'd design them myself if I had a decent printer for this kind of decals...

  • Hah, you could still contact him about fixing that. Or get some kind of guarantee from Velociao regarding their print quality.

  • At the end I made a decal sheet with what I need (including proportions etc.) and sent it to Cyclomondo. He said he can easily make what I need.
I'll post here once they'll arrive!

little messy (and mostly copied and pasted from velociao):

  • While the frame is still at Argos cycles (the deadline was for the 8th of august), I ordered a pair of 28h athena 8sp hubs and finally I was able to pick up these:

  • For a moment I thought I was looking at some oddball proto-fatbike rim from the nineties lol.

How did them decals come through?

  • Decent decals! Apart from the headtube badge, the "metallic" parts are not so defined... the rest looked alright to me, the lettering looks like it has a transparent bleed margin of about 1-2mm, while the original doesn't have any... let's see how it'll look once I get the frame!

  • Today I got the frame from Argos, top work from them!
That's some quick pics (impossible to catch the exact tone of the paint, it's so bright that blows the balance away!), need to face and clean the bb shell before I can install the bb. The wheels are just for reference.

  • Nice! Great build looks amazing. Have you picked the bar tape yet ?

  • I think I'll go for some black one, faux-leather probably... I have a set but didn't check if it fits good or not.

  • Done, not sure about the bartape but pretty happy overall.

  • Insane! So good...

  • WHERE did you find black Campag Delta brakes?!! I've only ever seen them in chrome. Well done you. Sick color frame, love it. :)

  • I actually never seen chrome deltas (apart from hi-polished one, not by campa for sure)... They were polished (most common), century (c-record), and graphite (Croce d'aune).
I found them on ebay a while back ;)

  • Them brakes - so nice. Great bike.

  • More inspiration for the Asolo that i have languishing in my basement!

  • Seems the Montello became famous in the other side of the world
