I have been wanting to get my hands on a quality 90s steel frame to add modern componentry to for quite some time now. I eventually decided to stick to my British roots and get over my lust for European frames and settle for an English frame. I haven't totally rescinded my love for Italian steel though - this Caygill is built from Columbus SLX "NEW" tubing. A compromise of sorts.
Anyway, this frame turned up and I had to have it. Neat TIG welding and vertical dropouts. I have dated the frame somewhere in the 90s. A confusing detail is the braze-on top tube cable guides more commonly found on frames from the 70s and 80s. After a bit of research I deduced that many British framebuilders retained braze ons over internally routed cabling due to Britain's poor wet weather. Water can collect in the internal route. This explains the older feature on a relatively modern steel frame.
Anyway.. here are some pictures. Poor quality Iphone pics for now. The fork on this bike really does it for me. Very elegant!
I am hoping to kit this frame out with the following equipment. I want to keep it subtle, refined, and classic looking.
Wheelset: Silver Mavic Open-Pros on Ambrosio Zenith polished hubs and gatorskins. Probably 32 spoked as I ride pretty heavily.
Groupset Silver Campag Veloce groupset, with the exception of the brakes, which I intend to swap out for a higher end Athena skeleton model.
Cockpit: So far undecided, any suggestions would be great!
Saddle: I'm leaning towards a brooks racing model to keep it nice and British.
This will be a fairly slow process as I want to get it right. Thanks for looking
