Paul hub

  • Hi,

I have a rear Paul hub, laced to a Velocity rim that I bought off a forumer a couple of years ago. It has served me well but a couple of months ago I started to get some play and then rapidly the play became so great that the wheel began to touch the stays!

I took it to my LBS to see if it was a bearing issue and if I had maybe hollowed out the cups in my neglect to get it sorted in time but they weren't able to open up one side of the hub to get to the bearings.

They thought they'd tightened it and fixed the issue without taking it apart but as soon as I rode it the same issue happened. I spoke to the mechanic and he said that you need a Paul specific tool to take it apart and he didn't know where to get one from.

Anyone else had a similar problem or managed to get their Paul hubs serviced? I know BLB stock them and they said they could have a look when I gave them a call but they didn't sound particularly confident and it's a bit of a pain in the arse for me to get over there with a wheel.

Just looking for other options really and advice as to whether I might have destroyed the hub beyond repair.

    Cheers,

    Loz

  • A quick update. Just spoke to a guy at Fitrovia Cycles who was pretty helpful and it sounds like my LBS were talking bollocks. Apparently you don't need a specific Paul hub tool. I just hope I haven't destroyed any part of the hub in my laziness to get it sorted sooner

  • Was going to suggest Fitzrovia. Did you see Alex (fairly slim, short dark hair, lots of tattoos and piercings)?

  • I know BLB stock them and they said they could have a look when I gave them a call but they didn't sound particularly confident

This is just what they're like. Jan would be fine face to face but don't expect a smile. He's a Slav.

Good luck with the hub. I'm sure Fitz will sort it.

  • name and shame your lbs

  • @Butters Went in to today and saw who Im assuming is Alex. Good guy. Sorted my hub on the spot. Took him a while to get the old cartridge out because of my abuse of the hub but charged me a very reasonable price and was really helpful.

@Skully Thanks. Yeah that sounds like the dude. He wasn't rude or anything, just a bit uninterested and I've never really felt any inclination to trek over to BLB.

@Dicki My LBS is Bike Boutique in Winchmore Hill. They've been really helpful in the past and I get along with the owner so this was a one-off. I rode past today and it looks like they've just closed down anyway. Loads of stuff stacked against the the storefront and a sign in the window. Didn't have time to stop and see what it said but it will be a shame if they have shut up shop.

  • BUMP!
I'm having a spot of bother with my front Paul hub. The bearings are grinding like Miley Cyrus at an awards ceremony.
I've no problem with replacing cartridge bearings and I've got a set ready to go, but the problem is getting at 'em.
As you can see on the pic, the bolts unscrew and remove, then the nut is loosened on the left to allow access to the adjuster ring (the part with the grub screw, behind the bolt).
    All good so far.
The problems begin on the right hand side. The nut on that side is tightened up to the dome shaped spacer, which is in turn attached to the axel. When you try to turn it, the whole piece spins on the axel. There's nowhere to attach a spanner to get leverage against the untightening of the bolt.
Any suggestions? Anyone successfully worked on Paul hubs?

  • Not sure if it'd be any use but you couldn't leave the l/h side assembled and put the hub into a fork and nip up the l/h bolt then with a cone spanner, crack the r/h nut off, tighten r/h bolt against the now loose nut and crack the l/h stuff off?

  • That's a really good idea!! I'll try it out a bit later. I'll be rolling a sweet wheel in no time!
