He could have spent the rest of the 22nd, after giving the sample in the morning, re-hydrating and eating in preparation for the Words the next day. I don't know about you, but if I got pissed up on the Friday, spent the Saturday feeling sorry for myself, but then made an effort to recover on the Sunday, then I'd be absolutely fine come Monday.
That there's truth in it. Yeah, he may have liked a drink. But to get hammered, then spend 36 hours without taking a sip of water and then turning up to race at the highest level of your career? And to be so dehydrated that it'll give you the blood readings of a doper, but no team mates thought you looked rough and none of the coaches monitoring you like a hawk saw an issue with your performance?
