  • The OTP Surly Straggler comes with a 36/46 chainset and 11-32t cassette, I'm thinking about just getting the f&f then building one up myself, should I try and match that gear range?

Planned use is commuting, light touring, light off road.

  • If you're not touring the alps, with 4 full panniers and the kitchen sink, that'll give you enough range. I'm running 32/42 and 11-28 (8 speed) low enough at the bottom end, nice shifting at the front and I conserve energy by coasting down hills.

  • I ran46/36 with 12-28 on a front loaded touring bike, work great and got me over all the mountain. Spain threw at me in the last couple of days, however it would be perfect if I have 12-30 so I have a gear spare if the worse come to worse, 11-32 will be fine.

I love the 46/36 combo, it's very much the tourer version of the old 52/42 chainset on road bike, it's nice to drop the front derailleur and find the perfect cadence without dropping 2 or 3 sprocket on the rear.

Like other said, it shift amazing, especially when you're hauling.
