  • Went out for a long ride on Sunday (180km) found the headwind hard going. Completely threw my fueling.. as I was going so slowly and not sweating, I just kept to my standard mouthful of coconut every hour.

Completely bonked on the return home when the tail wind allowed me to stretch my legs.
Any tips for calculating how much energy your burning, if a.) you don't have a power meter & b.) weather conditions mean speed is a poor indicator?

My plan at the moment is always carry a couple of ride shots in my pocket incase of emergency.

  • It doesn't matter how much your burning. It will be more than your body can absorb in the same given time. That's why you eat/drink your 70g* of carbs per hour - pretty much whatever riding you're doing.

*depends on body how trained the individual is but we're talking 30g range. This is all the body can deal with.

  • You want very easily digestible fuel sources, so bars and whole food is a no (less desirable). When you're on a 180k ride, the last thing your body wants to do is digest solid food.

Carb powders and gels with water are yes. I'd check tolerances with gels first TORQ are nice from memory.
