  • Smooth as anything. It was an On Yer Bike hire bike, so got lots of servicing and maintenance.

  • weight: Hset saves about 50g, seatpost,pedals.
Other stuff is not really worth it.
I tried to make mine stiffer, rather than lighter, hence brakes, hbar, cranks.
makes a lot of difference to handling, though I'd love it to be 4lbs lighter.

  • Mine is for sale!

  • Other half has got me the Carradice City Folder M bag, my bike is the S type. Which Brompton front carrier do I need for the bag, and will it fit the bike or interfere with cables etc?

  • s-type needs an s-type bag i believe.

  • brompton shop said the bag will be fine but need the s type frame

  • So far I have swapped 5 speed rear wheel for single speed, fitted Ti clamps (for ease of use more than the tiny weight save. Next is stiffer suspension block and lighter Kojak tyres.

Can I just fit any 1" headset or is there a weird Brompton thing with it?

  • Correct. The handle of the standard frame in theory fouls the brake cables, though lots of people do it. It isn't the bag so much as the frame.

I use a Demano bag that is designed to fit a standard height frame with the shorter S bag frame fine. Just not so much space for your hand when removing it from the bike.

  • Has anyone used one of these rear shocks? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brompton-folding-bike-rear-suspension-shock-colour-from-BIKEfun-/191234141189?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2c86716c05

Also, does anyone know where I can hire a sl2 for a week to properly decide if I want one? I've only found m3l's available

Is there a brompton dock near you? Although I'm not sure if there's a choice.

  • s-type needs an s-type bag i believe.

over the years i have had all the bags on all the frames on my s - the s frame and bag is neater but the carradice on the large frame fits fine too, just the cables get a tiny bit in the way at the back

  • I was away and it's now on Mrs Pun's birthday... not sure I can swing it anymore

  • Schwalbe marathon was defeated by a nail today. Getting the wheel off was a bit of a chore, am sure that will be easier a 2nd time. But I had about 10 minutes of scobling getting the tyre back on. Reassembly was easy, as was setting up the hub gears again.

  • There are many joyful Brompton owners on this thread, yes.

But that's not what you meant, is it?

  • If you believe Bromptons to be male, and you want to do naughty things to it, then possibly.

  • However, I'd me more worried about feelng sexual attraction to a bicycle, rather than that bicycle's gender.

Everyone knows you don't shag the local bike.

  • You're happy in wanting a Brompton?

  • I am thinking of getting one on the cyclescheme and having it as my main bike. I don't really do multi modal transport except for the odd occasion but the convenience of being able to take it in places, fold it up and put it in a supermarket trolley and simple front bag options appeal to me. Is this indulgent madness?

Also s type, m type, 2 or 3 speed, lot of decisions

Those are two of the main the reasons I have mine; effortless luggage capabilities and not having to lock up. I've never done multi modal transport in the year I've owned it.

I also use the Brompton as my "wet weather bike" if weather is absolutely terrible as, unlike my other bikes, it has full mudguards (and brakes).

In addition to all of the above, the option to wear casual shoes/clothes is a huge convenience too.

  • I like how you can easily fold your Brompton into a shopping carrier with the front bag attach to it.

  • Just saw an awesome black and red S type with disc brakes and a IGH in Trafalgar Square - on here?

  • I do the multimodal thing when I want to get somewhere without being sweaty cyclist man. It's rather handy to be able to unfold it at one end of the tube/overground and do a 20 minute walk in about 5 minutes.

  • Is this indulgent madness?

No. They are excellent for the reasons you've said. With one there is no reason not to ride everywhere - also what @Dom said.

I would have got a S for myself only, but got an M for more sit-up-n-beg position for the missus to use as well. 2 speed is fine for general London's famous London riding and 1/2 kg lighter.

  • hello Brompton owners

I know some of you have these pedals: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/mks-urban-step-in-a-platform-pedals-prod31462/ I've lost the tension plate on one (bolt loosened while I wasn't paying attention - but I still have the bolt and washer) and wondering if there is a clever fix? Otherwise I will just hunt for a nut and washer that do the job.

    :(

A few people have lost these; I seem to recall @Velocio saying he lost his. I don't think a replacement is available but I'm sure it could be fixed with a nut and a washer.
