Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • Another minor one that is probably fixed by mark all as read, but I've clicked on a couple of threads and been taken to posts years ago, the SE drinks thread took me to post 26 and tell me about your commute to a post on the first page?

    The worst thing was the feeling of disappointment as I realised that I wasn't actually reading new posts by crazy James, balki, Aidan and Prav ... :-(

  • @Velocio Text a little too long when the browser is less than 1180 pixels (give or take) in the Following section;

  • Not sure if this have been flagged recently, but i'm still unable to follow a user, when I click the box it says followed, but either a refresh or revisit shows them as not being followed (apologies this is still in the flagged and pending box)

  • Have avi's and usernames disappeared for anyone else...?

  • Horatio started it...

  • Yeah, I think @motter is playing with the template for comments and avatars.

    I've just restored the current live code.

  • For me, they are gone from the cp thread, but not from this one.

  • @Velocio: is it possible to escape the # and @ special characters in a post? I think these should be automatically escaped when posting code (colour hex codes all start with a # for example).

  • Is it not doing that?

  • Looks fine... a line starting with a # isn't picked up as either a heading nor a #hashtag .

  • Something was going funny with some apostrophes earlier. I can't find the post at the minute, but it seemed that markdown was applying some formatting to text between two apostrophes.

  • Find the post and I'll have a look.

  • PMs won't lose the body text if you forget to put a title in now. And I discovered another quirk along the way.

    I forget who pointed this out, or which thread it was in.

  • The author has used backticks instead of apostrophes, so markdown has formatted it as code.

    I'm not sure if we can do anything useful there, except perhaps ignoring backticks if they span multiple words on the same line (or some other measure that indicates it wasn't intended for small code listings).

  • Is it not doing that?

    Not always, see: http://www.lfgss.com/comments/11767219/

    In that code block it's appearing as
    background-color: #e8e8e8 http://www.lfgss.com/search/?q=%23e8e8e8

  • From a Markdown perspective, that is code.

    The real issue is that someone is using backticks ` as apostrophes.

    Or their keyboard is doing this. That kind of thing used to happen all the time when Microsoft Word was the editor of choice for email(!).

    I guess it's just that people aren't familiar with Markdown yet, so it's going to take a while before people realise what is going to happen when they have multiple ` in a line, or multiple * in a line... i.e. strange mysterious things.

  • BTW, my post shows that the Markdown library is doing the right thing there... backticks on different lines do nothing.

  • Oh my... the hashtag detector is being too aggressive.

    For a quick win, define the colour as RGB: background-color:rgb(232,232,232);

    This will be a low priority fix, so won't be soon.

  • Following a forum will put the items on your Following page.

    v. useful for Rider Down, but I don't advise people follow the Classifieds forums unless they want their Following page to drown in noise.

  • For a quick win, define the colour as RGB.

    Cheers, I'll do that.

  • Any plans to re-enable the new posts -> LFGSS twitter account link?
    Always found it useful when having a tweetdeck screen open, I could see new posts (almost) as they were created, which was quite handy for classifieds bargain spotting :)

  • Are you able to remove private messages from appearing in the following seciton. I find it a bit messy and confusing. I'd rather just go to the private message section, as before.
