Actually, on a related note, I've been thinking about an IGH for the 1x1 for a while but I do like riding ss plus putting gears on a bike named for its singlespeededness seemed wrong.

I've been looking at Nuvinci hubs recently though and I'm really tempted to get one for the 1x1.

I figure that as there aren't any distinct 'gears' within the Nuvinci hub I won't be shaming the frame too much?

You really gotta try it out as it's very much a personal preference.

The weight may be similar to a full 3x8 drivetrain but it's all in the back wheel, also you might not like the lack of direct feel which feel numb and disconnected.
