  • Sram never felt good with disc brake, not tried the modern shape one mind.

  • Will this mean that my s500 levers will be shit with my spyre brakes?

  • Not perfect but still work fine.

    I found the Cane Creek SCR-5 work perfect with disc, better modulation like a hydro.

    Only have the S900 cause I like the shape.

  • Lots of talk about the spyre pads being crap and should be switched. But to what? Which sintered pads are good? I understand which type is needed (m525/515). Sorry for hijack Hulsroy.

    TRP Spyre recall

    Hi Mads, Thanks for the question about Spyre. For TRP’s production
    and quality control is made in Taiwan factory. There is improved
    version of SPYRE since last December, enclosed please find the
    picture to distingush old and new version. From the problem you
    describe that we think it should be old version. Please advise your
    address and we will send you new Spyre to change back the old caliper

  • I had a ride on some hylex, would definitely go for them is you don't need sti, really powerful.

    What problems have you had eingang? I've been deliberating over what to upgrade my bb7 roads to for a while, would have like the 105 hydro/mechanical setup to replace my shifters but the price is a bit crazy in my opinion.

  • the braking point was too late for me, which means the lever was hitting the bar and wasn't at full power position

  • I had the same exprience using SRAM Apex levers with the old spyre. I hope the new version will work out better. If not I will sell and go for hydraulics and probably barendshifter.

  • Really? That definitely not normal, as they're highly adjustable to give you a wide range of modulation.

    I used to have that with the old standard hosing which compressed like crazy not allowing enough pull to perform emergency stop.

    2015 bicycles models now usually come with compressionless as standard.

  • Yeah I don't know if it's just older SRAM levers are shit , I've got apex and have struggled to get bb7s working , they work, but no big power, just weak but reliable stopping. Really want to sort it but don't want to have to replace the levers, was unming and ahhing over spare vs hy/rd, sounds like neither may work... FFS

    I definitely won't be going down bar end shifter route, I like integrated shifters too much. Apparently Shimano sti are much better with cable discs, are Shimano shifters compatible with SRAM mechs?

  • So I put the HY/RD on.

    Set up is easy, too easy, made sure there's no slack so the hydraulic can be engaged immediately.

    It felt much smoother and very easy to squeeze, it have a bit of a long throw but it can't be compressed any further once you lock the brake, this is largely due to the compressionless housing that prevent the spongy feel.

    I also realised why my Spyres feel harder - it's two spring make it harder to pull than the single sided one from the BB7 Road.

    Defintely a great improvement, just get the Jagwire MTB compressionless stuff to take full advantage.

    Tempted to get some hy/rd, but I won't be able to afford them for some time.

  • I tell you this, it's really nice going down a 16% descent and only need one finger to come to a standstill, it genuinely feel like a full hydro system if you do everything correctly.

  • Get compressionless first, I found there's little difference between the BB7 and Spyres, latter is easier to set up while the BB7 required the non moving side to adjusted closer as it wear out.

    The HY/RD is a big jump whether going for the Spyres is more of a crossgrade, just easier to fiddle.

  • Maybe it's a bit too late... but how did you managed to enlarge the pompino's frame from 120mm to 145mm?

  • Cold setting using Sheldon browns method.
    I never had any structural issues, but it still can't be recommended. I had a bit of heel strike using size UK 12 shoes.

  • I was also interested to know this. Did you strengthen the BB-Chainstay or seatstay-seat tube joints in anyway post cold setting?
