  • 5800 is 2221g minus BB, chain and cables according to this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/13647127@N04/sets/72157645790442968/

DA9000 BB can be had at £20 atm which weighs 67g, another 250g-ish for chain. Still heavier than Apex on paper I'll give you that.

Depends on what you are building. If its a no holds barred weenie build then go sram but for overall dependability, affordability and faster/cheaper replacement parts go shimano. If you stick to 10 speed there are bargains to be had at the moment on ebay, bikeradar etc.

  • Not weenie at all, function is prime but if all else is equal, then weight.

I have used SRAM Rival on my BMC for multiple thousand kilometres with only one issue, which was the GXP BB and I replaced that quickly and cheaply. Honestly though, it is build quality and reliability I'm worried about with the Apex group as I have no experience with it and wonder if SRAM taken shortcuts and used crap materials to get to a price point.

I'm more confident in Shimano's ability to produce reliable gear having used their mid tier groupsets for MTB's and never having issues.

How many miles have you put on the 105? Does the shifting smooth out after a while? The bike I tried was notchy and the lever action felt quite agricultural. This was an Evans test bike though.
