  • It's the races that are trashed: micro-welds have formed between them and the bearings, when you turn the steerer, the bearing moves and takes a bit of race with it, resulting in the pits.

    As a short-term fix, you could either rotate the races (sometimes they are only pitted in one section) or change the number of bearings (if the bearings are caged, remove cage and add a bearing or vice versa).

    The object is to mix things up, so the bearings and pits no longer match: the second is the most effective in doing that.

    Either way, ultimately you'll need a replacement.
