Brake Judder

  • My front brake has been juddering recently - but not consistently, it's only when slowing from <5mph to stop that I notice a fairly strong judder, as if the brake it quickly slipping and catching.

Rims are true, so it's not catching on an uneven surface.

    Any ideas?

  • Take it in for a headset service

  • Headset is a good shout - although I've tried the "hold the front brake and jiggle the forks" test and there doesn't seem to be any play. If it's loose enough to cause brake judder would there be enough play to feel this way?

In my experience, yes. Check the bolt that holds the brake to the frame hasn't come loose?

  • What kind of brake?

  • Operator error

  • I had this and it was the lower headset bearing

  • It's more likely that you just need to add a little toe-in to your brake pads.

  • Brake Judder?
    Isn't that a film?

  • It's more likely that you just need to add a little toe-in to your brake pads.

And adjust calipers/canti to make the pads apply grip to the rim evenly.

  • Do people still do that?

I thought that idea had gone the same way as KOPS, skinny rims and ISO/JIS BB tapers.

  • If they squeal and you want them to stop then toe them in.

  • Better off cleaning your rims and pads: toe-in might treat the symptoms, but it doesn't cure the problem.

  • It does if the problem is that the brakes ain't toed in.

  • Mr Logic has spoken^

  • What kind of brake?

Has to be said this really is a good question, but the OP hasn't bothered to answer it.

IME Cantis can do this at low speed cos fork flex, as the brakes grab the rim, makes the brake release a touch, then grab, then release ...

  • Cantis are dicks and love to squeal no matter what.

  • Single pivot sidepulls - there is a bit of toe out at the moment actually so it might be that. How does one go about toeing this kind of brake in?

  • I've never worked out which end of a pad is the 'toe'. #stupid

  • It's the forward end :)

  • Haha so essentially to toe in the brake you just bend it a bit with a spanner?
