why not just create quote and multi quote button? would be zillion times beterrer.

Because replies are better they tell the person you're replying to their post

How do they 'tell' the person you are replying though?

Because in following it includes the line "replied to your comment" and then below shows the response being made, so rather than seeing a post has progressed you can see a post has progressed in response to something you contributed.
