• There's a plan...

There seem to be a lot of plans, and a vast amount of usability which has been lost. I appreciate that lfgss was straining at the seams of the old software/hardware, but from a user perspective it was fine and on the evidence so far microcosm is very far from ready for prime time.

We have a lot of plans because we're ambitious.

    We want:

    • Native mobile clients
    • An awesome set of ignore features
    • Classifieds adverts that know what is sold, and can search the items in a meaningful way
    • A better home page
    • Improved navigation
    • Recurring events
    • Events with the ability to sell tickets
    • Enhanced embedding of stuff
    • Live updates that actually work consistently, across the whole site
    • Better information for people about who else is reading the thread/forum/whatever

The big change is that we can build those things. We can change this software. Whereas with vBulletin we were basically screwed. Not just screwed, but sitting on a timebomb that was due to explode because the upgrades were worse than the version we ran, and the old version ran on a version of PHP that was no longer supported (by anyone).

And you make it sound like vBulletin was a usability dream. But it wasn't... mobile sucked in a very big way. Events were terrible with enforced naming conventions of their titles to make them half usable. Event attendance through lists that broke constantly. No knowledge of when someone replied to you or mentioned you.

vBulletin was great for what it was, for when it was made. But that was a long time ago.

Microcosm isn't anywhere near perfect, and there are a lot of rough edges still being smoothed out. But it is of the moment, and the experience isn't hellish it's just a very big change from vBulletin and what we do have we will be improving constantly.
