Wobbly chainring?

Posted on
  • I've picked up an old SR Silstar crank with some very nice looking SR chainrings, however I noticed when I spun the cranks on the donor bike that their is a wobble by a few mm in the ring. I can't see any impact damage either on the ring or the crank itself, the wobble seems to be at the same place on the inner ring too, so question is were these made with a very poor tolerance to straightness or has something gone horribly wrong? And any opinions whether it will be ok to run on the bike?

  • If the chainring is slightly warped just get an adjustable spanner to straighten it up.

  • I've got silstar cranks and the chainrings aren't very straight in either plane. It doesn't cause any problems but it's worth noting at which point in the crank rotation the chain is tightest so you can set your chain tension more carefully.

  • If it's a geared bike, the concentricity probably doesn't matter very much. You could align them if you really want to be anal.

If it's a warped chainring (moving the chain side to side), I'd say it's dead. If it's just making the chain tighter and slacker (on a geared bike), I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Might not be the chainring. If one of the spider arms is bent, you will have the same effect. Remove the chainring, put it on a flat table and see if it's the ring... replace as appropriate. A warped chainring can be a major hassle if you have gears
