Internal Cable Routing without brazing

  • I'm in the process of salvaging an old Faggin frame. 2 of 3 cable guides on the tt have broken off, so I got the idea to try and get the brake cable to run through the tt, as I'm not going for a period correct build anyway and it just looks nicer in my opinion.

I did the research and I'm not too worried about drilling etc, but the problem is that I'm not able to braze the guides in. I know about the plastic cable guides, but I don't like their looks in combination with a steel frame.

Now I do have a little experience with fiberglass / epoxy, so I was wondering if anyone could shed a light on using that to get these things to stay in place?

  • I'm not sure fibreglass is going to be the right way to go. It might work at first, but will probably let go when you least expect it. Is it possible to run an outer all the way to the caliper?

  • Yeah, sure, I could always get some cable clamps, but for esthetics I'd rather not.

My plan of attack was to drill the holes, put in the brass or brake tube, fill the cap with epoxy, put some under it too, clamp it down and sand away any residue afterwards.

My main concern is that that there's something I'm overlooking in the sense of bonding between epoxy and iron, stress caused by riding - things like that.

  • You sound like you are fairly well equipped. Could it be brazed? A brake cable generates a fuckton of force I would have thought - way more than any of that stuff can handle.

  • In the end, it's all average diy stuff you can get at your local hardware store.

I actually just came to think of JB Weld. Stuff seems perfect for the job. 1x1cm piece can hold up to 275kg, so it'll probably withstand that fuckton of force. ;)

  • I'm sure I've had bikes with this,

kind of thing where the braze-on stopped the outer and only the inner wire continued through the frame. I'm sure in that case the tension in the cable would have held the insert in place had there been no brazing present.
