You are confusing him with Noël Edmonds. Noel Edmonds was presenting a tv show where a contestant died.
Mike Smith had a helicopter crash (with Sarah Greene) both were injured, and since then he hasn't done much presenting work, it looks like by choice.
RIP. If they aren't being yewtree'd, they are dropping off this earth :(
