Sorry but that's quite an ignorant statement. The point is it is their Country. Israel is the Jewish state. The basis of Zionism is that Jews need their own state. If you are Jewish, identify with other Jewish people and you believe that you need a Jewish state then why wouldn't you participate in the protection of that state?
I've met quite a few non-Israeli Jews who have done military service because they believed it was their duty.
Also that article actually seems to refer to Brits doing military service, rather than actually becoming professional soldiers. I would argue that there is a cultural dimension to military service that is different to say fighting in Syria for a rebel group.
The thing that I took from that article was how appalling it is that we now have such widely drafted terror legislation that you end up being able to prosecute one set of people and not another.
