  • I think it will be nice to have comments out in the open, if you agree with someone then say so rather than repping them, if you think they're a penisbeaker then equally do it in public.

  • There's always been a good number of people who have said they like the ability to send a quick message without the faff of a PM (or the expectation of a reply) and without making it public and/or cluttering up a thread. If Microcosm has nothing like it, it will be missed by plenty of people. It has nothing to do with 'reputation'.

  • I never saw the point of profile visitor messages.

  • Gaston and PoppaToppa think otherwise.

Says Will, former top rep hoe.

These are personal messages of support. If anything, I am likely to transfer them to PMs rather than put them out in the open.

You say hoe, I say courtesan.

  • Can we have tags back until then?

You get #hashtags on the other side.

Is rep being wiped clean or taken over?

    It's not migrating over.

  • take screen dumps of rep and keep them on you like a secret club card!

  • screen dumps

    Sounds messy.

  • So we all born again noobs?

And here was me thinking you were giving me a little pat on the back. You were just being all lazy the whole time! Sadface. Nerged. It means nothing. NOTHING!

We've made private messages much less faff.

We hope that will deal with it.

But... if not, then I personally like the idea of ephemeral messages being possible and super easy to do. No idea what that would look like nor where it would go. I hope we don't end up building a messaging app into the corner of the screen.

  • Why not have exactly the same as we have now - with comment and report under the avatar? Or is that actually more complicated to create than it sounds?

  • I'm still sad.

  • I'll send you a blank PM to replicate the comment I would otherwise have sent. Then our lawyers can get involved.

  • The good thing about rep (especially neg) is that there is little chance of a conversation ensuing, a pm however is an invitation to respond.

  • It's more complicated to create.

    But more importantly... it's confusing.

The vBulletin interface is a cluttered mess of things, and our core hypothesis is that if we simplify and create a much better experience for all users (rather than just power users)... that we can create sites that have more engagement (stickiness), which in turn translates to growth and makes the communities more awesome.

Rep comments... shit, how many times do new users have ask what people are going on about and where to find them? It's just a mess. Only a minority of power users really even know they exist.

Something will need to be created, to give feedback on good and bad posts, little acknowledgements. But whatever that is, it's not going to be rep comments as you knew them, they're a fudge and something better should replace them.

I'm not in a rush to figure it out though, I believe the best solutions become obvious through real need. When a good solution that new users can grok instantly is apparent, and that will add something significant to the experience, we'll make that.

  • Another advantage of rep is that they're a great alternative to the report function, I learn a lots from other's feedback.

  • ^^In a last act of defiance I'm going to neg you. Just because I can now and wont be able to later. Fuck The System

    You're dead to me man.

  • I actually started designing a new system.

    Called it, "Yay Meh Grr".

You'd get three faces in the corner which would be buttons... the Yay and Grr could leave a message, the Meh not so much.

  • It may be a mess, but it's a lovely mess.

    Yay meh grr, no ta

  • Gay murmur?

That meant you're a "power user" ed.
