  • Orban comes out and says what everyone knows he's been seeking to do for a while: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-07-28/orban-says-he-seeks-to-end-liberal-democracy-in-hungary.html

Orbán's ideal state is Russia. Like Putin he too dreams of a reborn empire. In contrast, however, to Putin and Russia, Hungry has no gold or diamonds and little gas to fuel its ambitions. Hungary's main natural resources are bauxite, farmland and water. Its main human resource was a well educated middle class. This middle class, however, has been in a nose dive for years and turned many of the young to forces that make Fidesz look like Anarcho-Syndicalists. Today's Hungarian students vote en masse for Jobbik--- a party that flaunts the symbols of the fascist Arrow Cross party. With a resurgent mixture of nationalism and anti-Semitism in fashion, Orbán has tried to position himself in the Orwellean tradition of doublespeak as "moderate". This too was once Erdogan's badge but he has since taken on the role, like Putin, of an ugly bully in the crowd. Orbán too would like to be able to push Hungary into a dictatorship. His dream is, one could think, to make Ferenc Szálasi proud.
