Yet another cycling forum - seemed like the obvious place to look.
It does seem to vary and you seem to have had more luck than me in this instance, but the word on YACF is that you are only really completely safe up to 250km, but YMMV.
It seems my crash was on the early side, but reading that link you posted I'm even more sure that's what happened. Describes exactly what happened with mine.
